Couple in India gets married over the speakerphone when their original planned wedding fell apart due to riots

VADODARA: Bilkis Choksi, 19, from Vadodara and Sufiyan Agarbattiwala, 21, from Ahmedabad, had a grand wedding in mind and invited nothing less than 1,000 people for the ceremony on Thursday. However, all their plans fell flat with a communal flare-up in the city and a curfew around the bride’s home at Mughalwada.

But a mere riot was not going to deter this couple. They kept their date with destiny and married on Thursday.

All they did was remove the frills and went ahead with what can be called a ‘e-nikah’.

With more than 100 kilometres between, the two decided to exchange their marriage vows over the telephone.

Bilkis uttered "Kubul hai, Kubul hai, Kubul hai" into a speakerphone in front of her family members as a Maulvi from the groom’s side asked for her consent from Ahmedabad.

"It was a unique experience. I never thought that I would get married this way," said Bilkis even as her face gleamed through her bridal wear. "I was bit upset as I could not enjoy the way I had planned. But then the conditions were such that I had to marry on phone. However, I am happy that we got married on the day we had decided."

Initially Bilkis’ family had planned to shift the wedding to Ahmedabad to skip the riots. But the logistics were too daunting and asking the groom’s family to come to Vadodara did not make sense.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
