i hate dell..

had a friend who got a 5k comp there and their support is just plain horrible

That's unusual. One thing Dell has always been noted for is their excellent customer service. I suppose that's gone downhill over time (I wouldn't know as I haven't bought a Dell since my Pentium II 266MHz sometime around 1997). I have some good memories of that machine. I got my first 3D video card then -- the Diamond Monster 3D, which utilized a 3DFX Voodoo1 chipset. To give you an idea of how "powerful" those cards were back then, it had all of four megabytes of RAM and was PCI; not AGP or PCI-E.

dell tech support blows. i bought a dell for my dad, which included extended on-site warranty and tech support. they refused to send someone out to work on the computer, dad got it fixed at a local shop for $50.

neighbor had a similar situation, they sent out a tech only after she took the computer to a local dell authorized repair center and they told dell the machine had issues. all the tech did was slap in a new hd and memory and he was gone in 10 min. didn't stick around to insure the new parts worked correctly nor assisted with setup.

I suppose you didn't bother reading the part where I wrote "I suppose Dell tech support gone downhill overtime" and that I "haven't owned a Dell machine in over ten years," right? It's not too difficult to believe that Dell's customer service and tech support departments were better back then -- or at least, they were when I used them. Your experiences may differ, of course.

That is what the in house tech get paid for, Just come replace the part and leave, they are not supposed to reload OS or what ever.. sucks but that is what they get paid for.

I would on the other hand make sure it works, or load the system also I would pass out my own busness card and have them call me in future. I can start up a busness like that.

you did not screw up your build. the sound that is built in on your computer is ok. BUt if you want to have better sound you can. You can add it later on if you want but you dont have too..

I built a computer once and when I played music or needed to hear sound, it was really crappy sound really bad. So i went to the store and bought a new sound card, and I put it in, it souinded great and much better then the build in one. I tthink the sound chip was bad on the mother board.

yeah it sucks. the neighbor had no idea what to do on bootup, where it went thru and she had to set it up. good thing i was there or she'd been on the phone with tech support (bob in india) again.

william, something to watch for. on internet explorer i kept getting a redirect to a dell/google site while surfing the net. i got to looking at the programs installed and sure enough, there was one called dell redirect. i deinstalled it and not had the problem since.

I don't think you can buy a PC from Dell (or anyone) that doesn't have a sound capability - especially on the XPS machines.

Its more important to have decent speakers - from the looks of it you have the same ones I ordered. I quite like the sound quality.

My dad has bought 3 or 4 dells in the past but he said he will never buy other dell again cause of the wonderful and great tech support they have.

I have a dell but that is just a back up of a back up. I only got it cause I had a card for a dell from my school.

other then that, I wont buy a machine off the shelf, I will build one.

Probably a video codec issue. You can probably find a download for media player.

Firewall could be blocking them. Blocking scripts that is. Or some sort of setting in your browser could be blocking scripts..
