XP is an average operating system and being canned June. The biggest complaints about Vista are because of people trying to use 5 year old hardware with a new operating system designed for the latest hardware. My Vista ultimate 64-bit machine kicks ### over my XP PC. Using it for over a year now..

No, the biggest complaints about Vista are about how much it sucks; which it does. I told Microsoft that while I was doing their Beta testing (I'm a Microsoft OEM Partner). It's like Windows Meets Fisher-Price. They tried to make it like Mac OS-X, but only got the graphics close; not the functionality. It's a total cluster-f##k.

I have the option of XP Pro on this purchase, but it seems to cost more than the "standard" Vista install....

I have had great success with XP, long after the service packs. Thoughts?

Vista needs good hardware to run well, but beyond that, there really is no good reason to buy Vista, and a few reasons to avoid it.

Im sticking with XP, until I can't anymore. For whatever reason.

Aye. People who say "My new computer with Vista is SOOOO much faster than my old one with XP!!!!11" neglect to think about the fact that the hardware is twice as fast. Of course, if they ran that same hardware with XP, it would beat the ####### out of the same computer with Vista. XP is bad enough, but Vista is a TOTAL resource hog. You really SHOULDN'T need 2GB of RAM just to let your Operating System run. Piece of #######.

Once I can't update XP any longer, I'm going to Linux full-time. I'll just use Wine so I can use all of the Windows programs that I need.... I'm tired of this forced change/upgrade #######. I can run Linux on a damn Pentium 1 with 64MB of ram.

I agree totally Platy, therefore I will go with XP Pro on the new machine. On the aformetioned computer, it runs great, it will run much better on a faster machine. F - Vista.

Thanks for the advice!!!

Hey there William,

We just got a Dell XPS 420, not sure what model you are looking in to, but gotta say you should go with an XPS system. Off the bat, you get two years in home total service on the system.

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.4 Ghz

4 gigbites RAM

Windows Vista Home Premium

22 inch monitor

We had some hiccups at first, Vista apparently takes a week or so to figure out what the hell it is doing [2 Blue Screens of Death in a week!] But after that, no problems at all. In fact, I planned to dual boot with Windows XP Pro, but now am not sure I will bother. Also, the system was set to conserve power, which slowed Vista down, turn that off and Vista runs well.

We have XP Home on my old XPS Inspiron laptop.

Your system build should be able to handle Vista no problem, but I would recommend an XPS Desktop, as opposed to other Dell products for the superior support.

Its supprising how easily people accept blue screens of death.

Lol Linux.. Your issues during beta testing probably had a lot to do with my previous post. I am running 4 monitors and using some demanding programs and vista works like a charm. I also have a HD TV tuner, wireless network, media center, 20 widgets, dreamscene background, another 10 apps usually running at the same time. No problems here. Vista is not supposed to be a linux style bare to the bone operating system.

This reminds me of a article I read the other day how a cars fuel economy has basically stayed the same since 1963. How is that so considering how much engines, fuel injection etc have advanced. Simple. Look at all of the load the engine is now under from power steering, power windows, DVD players, SAT NAV, Dual zone climate control, Sat radio, Stability control, electric seats, heated seats etc.

PS My Sprint Mogul probably has better graphics than linux..

I also upgraded to 64-bit vista ultimate and that is truly bullet proof. Much better than 32-bit

Vista might work good, but XP will still be faster on your same hardware. Since there are not really any Vista any programs, why opt for the slower operating system?

ready4ONE,

First off, so happy to see you posting again! We have missed you!!

Hope all is well with you guys.

We will make the final choice on Thursday, after my business trip (although Eva only cares about the screen size, 22" widescreen minimum). All other system advice is appreciated.

I don't easily accept blue screens of death, Dell damn near got this computer back. However there have been none after the first two, and having worked for years with XP have seen Blue Screens before. I talked to the Dell tech support, and after some work, am now happy with Vista. Is it the greatest operating system ever? No. But it is not bad, will be supported long after XP is not, and my particular system I can install XP Pro at any point I choose and everything in it has drivers except the little cheasy Dell Mini-View.

Vista is not about speed. It is about graphics, multimedia etc.

All of which work just fine on XP. With the exception of DX10, which offers very little graphics improvement, what can Vista do that XP cannot?

I was commenting more in general. Many people are very accepting of problems with windows or software that runs on it.

People have been complaining about Windows since day one. Nothing has changed really. I remember when XP first came out.

The Mac OS works because they only have x hardware to write code for. Try installing a MAC OS on 50 different types of Motherboards, 40 different video cards and then we will talk. Linux is a total waste of time. Takes 3 hours to execute 1 command and has the gui of windows 95..

Hi William, we are doing well thanks! Just got back from our first big visit with they OBGYN today! 8 weeks and 8 days along the road. Got to hear the heartbeat etc.

If you get a modern system, you won't have too much trouble with Vista after the first week, and running a few tweek's like changing the power setting I mentioned above, from how they set Vista in the factory. A 22 inch monitor is a lot easier on these old eyes.

Unfortunately they seem to have dropped the incredible Adobe software package we got on ours from the XPS 420 packages. This is an incredible machine for photo and video work.

Also depends on the brand PC you buy. Dells are okay but I prefer HP machines. Just bought a few HP laptops and they are fast. Yes with VISTA 64-bit ULTIMATE.

Edit: Much faster than the desktop replacement XP laptops.. Keep in mind these also had proper desktop CPUs, 7.2K HDD, 3 gig ram rather than some shitty centrino chip..

Congrats on the "pending new arrival", please keep us posted. Our little girl is 3 and 1/2 + months already. What a sweetheart she is.....

Back to topic, I am convinced that XP Pro is best for us now, even on a new computer. I always have the option to change downstream.

Any other system configuration offers out there?

I would recommend not compromising the system to get XP. I think the XPS 420's with Quad Core processors, or the 630's with dual [and I believe the last top of the line desktop models shipping with XP] are Dell's best unless you want to spend more than $1500.

The top of the line Dell's only come with Vista, the rest are pretty much older systems they haven't sold yet. If you get Vista Ultimate you get downgrade rights to XP. But my guess is, if you get a top of the line system, you won't wind up going back to XP. I am a complete fan of XP! And Vista almost scared me off of this computer but I am very glad that it didn't.

Congrats on your little girl as well! I am sure she is quite a doll!

I haven't owned an HP computer in years, but I can tell you Dell is pretty good about not putting too much crapware on their shipped systems.

Filed: Timeline

We just got a new Dell computer this weekend and it has vista on it. It has 3GB and runs just fine, much faster than my old computer which was only a few years old. I use XP at work and find I had no problems going to vista. I just don't see any point in paying so much for a computer with an operating system that will be obsolete in a couple months. Then you end up paying to upgrade to the new system. I'm glad we went with vista even after all the "vista is hell" comments on here.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!
