It may not be feasible - but the broad owership of guns is at least partly the reason that certain types of crime flourish. Not to mention "rampage" shootings, which happen with alarming frequency in this country.

In an ideal world no guns would be ideal. I agree. But we don't live in that type of world.

The other issue is that a total gun ban is useless because the police in America simply do not have the right to search people. Especially when pro-criminal groups like the ALCU will not allow them to do so. The laws are the biggest problem facing America. They are both counterproductive and self defeating. Empowering the crooks while abandoning the innocent and drowning the police in endless paperwork and rules to follow.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Ok, I'm not trying to be a poop-starter, but I have read a LOT of your posts...you really seem seem to have the red-azz for America. Why did you move here?

I'm being seriously curious, not jerky.

To be honest I have always thought highly of the US until I actually moved here and lived here. I really like the countryside and small towns I have been to but the cities are seriously a joke. Run down crime ridden etc.

Combine insufficient police manpower and armament with insufficient gun control law and an economy that breeds the perpetuation of unequal opportunities and this is what you get.

Perhaps all I need to do is bump my own thread to reply to the apparent nitpicking.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I've only really spent time in Houston, Seattle, New Orleans and Austin.

Austin and Seattle are both fabulous, imo. I love New Orleans b/c it's home, but Lousiana is indeed the land of crooks.

Can't speak for other cities without first hand knowledge.

I was just wondering because you do seem somewhat negative but I'm glad you don't hate everything :)

I love the south. The hospitality is great. I have never really spent any time in the mid west so I don't know what they are like.

I think for me the number one issue affecting America and my perspective of the country is the huge problem with crime. While it is a great country with issues like everybody else, the crime / ghettoizing of cities is a huge negative. And I mean huge. For others it may not be a big deal but for me it's a deal breaker. Probably why I love traveling through country towns so much.

crime happens in country towns too. meth-related crimes, for instance. i feel safer with lots of people around in a big city rather than in the middle of nowhere with no one else around for miles.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Ask Chicago police for that matter.

That would be kind of creepy, like assuming VJ can change Chicago's crime rates.

What we can do, however, is pay attention to what they say in public. Last weekend they came out in force with SWAT teams onto the streets most affected by this crime wave. Result? Less murders.

The Chicago police are not shooting people are they. So why would I ask them. And if they did, it would end up like NYC where the cops are somehow to blame.

Basically a band aid rather then addressing the actual cause. And the cause is not guns.

Not quite what I was talking about B.

To clarify it for you, its more about being blatantly outgunned and outmanned as part of the combination of my original statement. Even with police-issued assault rifles.

And no $hit Sherlock, the cause is not singular as you imply. Look at the entire statement and ponder the repercussions of reality.

We just never learn do we?

When they include the little facts left out like which demographic is committing the crimes. What percentage of Americans were plantation owners. How many slaves where actually captured and traded by rival tribes in various African nations etc etc.

My favorite part is they wanted to live peacefully. What part of 37 shot don't you understand???? And this article was printed in 2008, not 1808
