The government plans to begin collecting DNA samples from anyone arrested by a federal law enforcement agency.

...

Using authority granted by Congress, the government also plans to collect DNA samples from foreigners who are detained, whether they have been charged or not ... That would be a departure from current practice, which limits DNA collection to convicted felons.

...

The Homeland Security Department — the federal agency charged with policing immigration — supports the new rule.

...

The rule would not allow for DNA samples to be collected from immigrants who are legally in the United States or those being processed for admission, unless the person was arrested.

Given America's level of paranoia, everyone will need to be arrested. Does a parking ticket constitute an arrest?

I'm still not sure why it is a bad thing. The idea makes me queasy, but I don't really know why. If you are arrested and they take your DNA, couldn't they rule you out? But why doesn't it sit well?

But isn't it DNA evidence that is proving some of these guys not guilty?

maybe because even if the person is ruled out, what happens to the dna? some massive government database of dna maybe?

A person is added to the National DNA Database in the United Kingdom every 45 seconds, an opposition MP

warned amidst reports that the Home Office has been urged to allow police to take DNA samples for offences

such as dropping litter.

Big Brother Britain has world's biggest DNA database

If they're going to start collecting DNA from anyone arrested (even if not charged), then they should do it for everyone (USCs included) and not just for "foreigners".

Aren't legal permanent residents supposed to be granted almost all the rights and privileges as USCs? This new law puts LPRs as 2nd class citizens.. oh wait, LPRs are not citizens so I guess LPRs are 2nd class. :P
