Trying to run someone down with a car isn't attempting to drive away, it's vehicular homicide.

Grazing someones leg is trying to run them down? ;)

you don't even have to hit someone for it to be trying to run them down. just aiming the vehicle in their general direction and hitting the gas will do that.

I don't understand why these cops are called racists- 2 of them were black. I think the media let this spin totally out of control. If Sean Bell was white, nobody would have cared! I'm sick of these people pulling the racist card. My husband and I are the only white people on our street and I lost count how many times we've been discriminated by black people- throwing bottles at us, harrassing me on the train (My white butt apparantly doesn't deserve a seat on the subway anymore)

and I don't even want to get into the name calling.

i'm guessing that some may count that as affirmative action.

My husband has to justify every friggin' speeding ticket he writes in court, because a perp is more credible than a police officer in NYC.

He's out there right now risking his neck, for idiots like Sharptons safety, and I hope he'll never be in a situation where he will have to make the decision to either shoot and face 25 years in jail or not shoot and die.

your husband has a tough job and my total respect for what he does every day.

Sean Bell and his buddies were not lynched. It's a tragedy how he died, but police officers have the right to shoot if they believe their life is at danger. How many rounds they shoot is completely irrelevant. Sean Bell tried to run one of the cops over.

They had a long criminal record, they were out at a bar notorious for guns, prostitution and drugs and it was clearly stated by more than 1 witness that they were mentioning to get guns.

The groomsmen's testimony contradicted itself from the get-go. It was a fair trial and these cops should have never been charged with manslaughter in the first place.

that in bold is really what counts.

Where are the protest when cops are shot Al Sharpton? Where are the protests about the thousands of young black males who shoot and kill thousands of people, of any color, each and every year in the US..

His brothers regularly shot and kill many many people in DC yet I don't see any protests from him about that here. Morons..

It is your Jesse Jackson, Al Sharptons, Jeremiah Wrights that keep that community down.. You know the usual wankers who 'ironically' happen to have a rev attached to their name..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

If you're pointing at gang violence - the distinction really is that the black males who "shoot and kill" (and who are themselves shot and killed) tend to do it to their own kind - within their own communities, and within specific territorial areas - hence inner city crime (NJ's gang crime problem for instance can be traced to areas like Newark, The Oranges and Atlantic City for instance). You do have the rivalry between black and hispanic gangs of course - but again, the vast majority of that type of crime is territorial and linked to the movement of drugs in those areas. If you don't go near those areas the odds of your being a victim of that kind of crime go down quite a bit.

What Sharpton is playing on is the idea of us and them, that the police and the justice system are institutionally racist and biased against people of color. There is *some* evidence of this - but Sharpton has the tendency to go off the deep-end, playing up the idea that noone is looking out for the interests of the black community. When that argument is taken from a general one to a specific argument in regard to a criminal case like this - the idea that justice isn't served unless someone goes to jail or loses their job basically promotes mob justice.
