Sharpton speaks out on the Sean Bell case - "Even people with criminal backgrounds have civil rights"

“We’ll pursue to this case with all deliberate speed and determination. This verdict is one round down, but the fight is far from over.”

He said, “Many of us felt, when the jury was waived that we cannot have confidence in a judge-jury. We gave them the opportunity to prove us wrong.”

He then warmed up to a metaphor for the case. “What we saw in court today was not a miscarriage of justice,” he said. “Justice didn’t miscarry. This was an abortion of justice. Abortions are intended. Miscarriage could be you couldn’t hold the baby justice, you couldn’t take care of baby or it was an accident. But this was no accident.”

He said, “When a judge sits on a bank and says he considered the criminal background of some of its victims, that is an abortion and it is illegal. Even people with criminal backgrounds have civil rights.”

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I see the point he is making point - but he's over-reacting as usual.

Bemoaning the judge for dismissing charges on the basis that the criminal history of some of the witnesses makes them unreliable isn't new, and it certainly isn't as scandalous as he's making out.

Presentation and demeanor do indeed influence court cases - though not to the point that it would override compelling evidence. From what I understand there wasn't compelling evidence of what really happened - so its essentially the word of the detectives against that of the victims.

Sometimes cases work out like that - where there's no direct evidence and you have to weigh the plausibility of the statements given.

It stands to reason that a habitual thief is going to be viewed as a rather less reliable truth-teller than a pillar of the community.

Maybe when hell freezes over  we'll see the Rev. standing up for a USC that's not of his own ethnicity. However, I wouldn't hold my breathe, but maybe he will surprise us all. One can only hope... I believe that it would make him a lot more credible if he did in this day and age, despite the obvious racism that still percists in America.

Al Sharpton...

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
