Could be the "price of plane gas" adjustment, but its funny how just two days ago routes were nearly 50% cheaper than they are today...

Any summer travelers that haven't booked yet to see their SOs?

Lets see if its all a ploy to see who'll pay up. I'm seeing ridiculous fares across the board well thru October.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

yesterday i booked a roundtrip okc-cebu-okc via united & cathay pacific for the end of july for $1525.00. thats only $75.00 more than the trip i took in dec...my SO's one way was $975.00 (but, we booked hers..same flights adjoining seats in the PI) but if the cost of fuel keeps going up (which i'm sure it will) international airfare is going to get way out there.

Yeah we know summer travel is always much more expensive than other low-peak seasons...

I just find it completely amazing how the price has gone up nearly 100% in some routes I priced as recently as 2 days ago... On AA, Chicago to Bogotá was (all in) $550 two days ago. Today its going just over $900. I doubt that fuel costs THAT much... Going to the other side of the planet this is certainly not...

I've checked several booking engines as well as company sites... and the result is pathetically the same. Lets see what those of us that haven't booked yet do... I am ticked since just yesterday the wifey got authorization from work to take July off and now she may have to go back to that work schedule. Lucky me I can arrange for my vacation time pretty much anytime.

I can only hope for those of us that haven't booked that this is a system-wide glitch.

If prices keep on going up like this international travel may become a thing of the past for the average Joe. Most planes and airlines were not designed to be profitable at oil over $100 a barrel.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That is a bargain when compared to other routes. The June / July price from Melbourne to NY return is now $3,125..

Its definitely a fare issue as well. I sample booked a few itins just now and the fees stay the same when comparing it to the sample bookings I did a couple of days back.

Hopefully the flying public, average or not, sends the airlines a message that they may pay more for off-peak and peak travel due to normal business reasons, but an increase in the price of oil is not an excuse for them to gouge customers.

I smell an adjustment coming soon as they notice less bookings in the next few days. Hopefully!

Yes. I am used to paying around that to go to Bogotá. Unfortunately the Mrs hadn't gotten cleared for a vacation when I got the fares. This is of course, after holding it on AA as a rez.

I'm happy I booked my ticket 3 months ago to KTM - I did pay $200 more than last year, but this flight is more direct - last year I had to stay overnight in Bangkok on the way coming and going so when you count hotel, taxi, etc. the cost was about the same. The same flight was over $2K this year so I decided to go with Etihad instead. I was a little sad because I would have liked to go back to Thailand but this way I get to spend a little more time with Govi - every moment is precious... (L)

If they go up a lot that can be my excuse not to go to England and take a vacation elsewhere

Yeah so I thought of that... but my usual elsewheres (flying) are just as ridiculously overpriced. Gonna have to do it on $4+/gallon somewhere in the lower 48 now... looks like.

day of travel....weekday vs. weekends (fri-sun) makes a difference on price. + i noticed it also makes a difference on what day you book the flight...check it out if your bored sometime.

Even browser choice can make a difference sometimes.

Historically, better deals are available directly through the airlines on Tuesdays through Wednesdays in the wee hours. I would usually hold/purchase between midnight and 2 AM. Not even that came out this time.

I guess it will be a wait and see approach this time around.
