A few months ago we were in a chinese restaurant with an asian girl that my wife works with. Half-way through the meal she was asking which of the wait staff was our waiter because "they all look the same"

That's what they say about us "people of color" also.

Actually, the Chinese people I work with here in China say that we (White people) all look the same. They certainly think that all Africans look the same. They also say that we smell bad because we eat dairy, though dairy products are becoming ever popular here.

I can relate to this. I used to have a harder time telling my Korean students apart, but after 8 years of teaching where Koreans are the majority, I can see a vast difference in their looks. It's what you are used to seeing, and there is a grain of truth in it. When a new teacher asks, who is so-and-so, I can only answer, well, he has straight black hair, brown eyes, wears glasses, average height. This describes 95% of the boys in the school, where as if I say, he has red hair, it only describes one boy in the school.

As far as Asians go,I believe if you hang around them all the time, you can tell them apart. In my neighborhood there were many Southeast Asians.I had no problem telling them apart.Everyone had a unique nickname also.Mostly after an animal.(I'm being serious now)

Now this is outrageous ,names after animals .......to south asians .How abt i say names of panama ppl looks like bird names to us,thats disrepectful!! isnt it.

i believe colored ppl (including southasians)are more racial than white ppl ,all of us think they are superior to us ...A myth , ignorance and sheer inferiority.

I can speak to only Thai people and we do have nick name after an animal both in english or Thai

like my friend nickname is "Bird" which obviously means 'bird' the other girl name 'Nok' which means "bird" or a guy name "Tao" which means 'turtle' , name "Mod" means 'ant', name "Moo" means 'pig'

the popular animal name that's duplicate from english are bird and ant

PS. our nick name and real name are both given from our parents so it's not like William is Bill and such...

Asian women cant drive is the only stereotype i'm struggling with

You can say whatever you want about us Panamanians for you are entitled to your opinion.I'm just saying that most of my neighbors named their kids after animals.Like "Nok-Noy","Buk-Cop",and, "Mah-Noy."

Sometimes. Sometimes not.

What do you think ? I was in this store and 3 bratty kids were making fun of an Asian man, saying how much he resembled Jacky Chan, and other stupidities. Is this what they learn from their parents ?

For me, I use the word "Forbidden". "Can't" doesn't quite make me feel safe when I don't have the garage door opener.

Typical Hawaiian ethnic stereotypes:

Haole(white): Greedy, uptight and ignorant of 'local' Hawaiian culture

Hawaiian: 'Hang-loose', fat, lazy, either work in construction or collect welfare and live in 'da housing'

Portuguese: Unintelligent(on the mainland there are Polish jokes, Hawaii has 'Portagee' jokes)

Filipino: Wear flashy clothing, say 'psst psst', Filipino girls always marry haole or black military guys. Filipino men do gardening/landscaping jobs.

Chinese: Most work as dentists or doctors, very stingy.

Japanese: Very conformist, nerdish, clean to the point of OCD, most work civil service jobs. Well-to-do Japanese girls act princessy and have names like 'Charlene' - in school the nickname for them was 'Chars'.

Samoans: Don't f#ck with them. Big, ill-tempered. Those that do not collect welfare usually in auto detailing business.

I am not saying I agree with this, just these are the stereotypes that a lot of local Hawaiian humor is based on and that I grew up with in school. Sometimes they are true, sometimes not.

Psychologists once believed that only bigoted people used stereotypes. Now the study of unconscious bias is revealing the unsettling truth: We all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. We have met the enemy of equality, and the enemy is us.

*snip*

That test was all over the BBC a few months back. I actually took it and it told me that it revealed a strong (positive) bias towards black people. I guess I must hate the whiteys!

I'm aware that my thoughts are occasionally affected by stereotypes but I do my best not to let them affect my words or actions. Even so I'll still find myself, for example, crossing the street if I see a gang of teenagers up ahead. I also really admire those who can dismiss or shrug off stereotypes; there are a lot of negative stereotypes about the English, and it's hard to resist arguing against them if I see them mentioned in a thread.

Ditto. I have a positive bias toward black people and a bias (negative) against white people.

pip pip, cheerio, wot? wot?

:P

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
