NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.

...

Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said: "At a time when American families are struggling to keep their homes and jobs while paying more for everything from gasoline to groceries, how on Earth would anyone who thinks they can lead our country also think it's acceptable to oppose equal pay for America's mothers, wives and daughters?"

McCain stated his opposition to the bill as he campaigned in rural eastern Kentucky, where poverty is worse among women than men. The Arizona senator said he was familiar with the disparity but that there are better ways to help women find better paying jobs.

"They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," McCain said.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

The House already has passed the measure in the wake of the 5-to-4 Supreme Court ruling, which said that employees must file a formal complaint within 180 days of an employer's initial decision to pay them less than what they think is fair.

...

The measure, now in the Senate, would extend the deadline for filing a complaint. It would have each discriminatory paycheck trigger a new claim-filing period, that is, another 180-day window in which to file a case with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Simple actually. The following clown answered their own question.

Forcing anything on a company will simply lead to layoffs. Thus Zero pay..

What year does she think it is? 1925. What about more women going to college than men? Why don't we change this to ensure equal number of men attend college in the United States. The country is going bankrupt and people are still obsessed with rights issues.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Women should be paid the same as men for equivalent jobs. There's no reason for that not to be the case.

I don't know....

The initial decision to pay a woman less is made at the time of hire. 180-days from that day is approx 6 months from the date of hire.

Let's say a woman accepts a lower salary, but doesn't realize it at the time. Most employees don't discuss salaries so that is plausible. She is an employee there, starts developing professional relationships with her peers, and at the time of the annual review - 1 year from her date of hire - she finds out she is a lower payband at a lower salary than her peers.

Her window to complain has already expired.

180-days from any paycheck seems reasonable. It basically amounts to 6-months from the date of termination.

Who is to say this is not the case.. I know a lot of women at work earning more than the males.

This is just another BS issue to divert the attention from congress, house etc doing nothing for the actual prosperity of this country. They other day a senator was arguing a cell phone ban bill on planes. Gezz what a pressing issue for hundreds of thousand of Americans loosing their jobs. And for the other's whose pay is shrinking.

Sure.

This bill addresses those cases where a woman is paid less for the same work. It may not happen where you work or where I work, but if it does happen anywhere, this bill provides the victim with a 6 month window from her date of termination to lodge a complaint.

I don't think that's unfair.

Why isn't there any regulation that automatically detects these things? Or is there?

Companies should have to report salary data. Why is the onus on the worker to determine whether or not he/she is being discriminated against? I don't know what anyone else makes around here.

Companies share salary data with each other, but its so no one has to pay more than the 'market rate' is.

The only protection workers have, AFAIK, are sources like salary.com but they report metrics based on broad aggregates. Salary.com won't tell me what my peers who sit around me make.

Which is why I am such a big fan of salary transparency. If employers won't allow it, I believe employees should openly discuss it. The taboo on salary discussions benefits only the employer.
