Machine-Gun-Toting Officers To Patrol NYC Subway

Starting Thursday, special bomb teams - "Torch Teams" - will be toting submachine guns and bringing bomb-sniffing dogs onto the platforms and into the trains.

...

The city's massive subway system has long been considered a potential terror target; six officers and a dog will constitute a team, patrolling all platforms and trains in 12-hour shifts. The "Torch Teams" will be toting MP5 submachine guns that are used by Navy seals and FBI hostage-rescue teams.

...

Similarly equipped NYPD units, known as "Hercules Teams," have patrolled Wall Street, the Empire State building and other aboveground city landmarks for years as a response to the World Trade Center attacks.

My husband is from Jamaica. Seeing machine gun toting men walking all over the place is of no surprise to me.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I wonder if these outward shows of strength have the opposite effect than intended? I mean, what a coup to pull off a terrorist attack in the face of these security measures? It's not like anyone really believes that they can be in all places at all times - or do they?

PH - it sounds like being everywhere all the time is their intention....

That's kinda what I meant, although I think I might have worded it badly. I just meant to advertise this kind of 'super security' is as likely to have negative results as positive. At least in my opinion.

I wonder how effective an MP5 would be in a crowded subway?

LEO like the MP5 because of the low recoil. So being able to stay on target is easier, less likely to hit someone in the crowd.

I think it's stupid and a waste of our money.

If a terrorist walks into a subway station and sees machine-gun-toting cops, what's he

going to do? He'll just walk to the next station.
