New Poll: Americans Prefer House (enforcement-only) Approach on Immigration

Nice try, but I think women are actually less likely to vote or otherwise act against their economic self-interest than men. Note, for example, how many votes Bush got among white working-class men, even when it was clear that the policies he intended to enact would have hurt their jobs the most.

I think it's more economic than anything else. Now, it's still a bias on the part of women. But I don't think it's as simple as a fear of foreign women "taking" American men, as I think that women who come here illegally tend to come with families already.

Yeah, abstractions like country and pride and honor appeal to men a lot more than women. Women are more centered around themselves and their family. JMHO.

Women hate other women and they don't want foreign girls coming here to take their men or they think the men that find women in another country are pathetic.

Generalization.....yes, but an attempt to start to explain the numbers. I could be crazy.

I'm sure that's part of it. I bet if Latinas didn't look the way they did the numbers would be different :P

True.....they are the most beautiful women in the world after all

:D

No argument there.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with perception. We might know this but Jane America might think of women coming here as competition or thinks of mail order brides........there isn't a phrase for mail order grooms after all.

See, merc, part of your theory happens to coincide with mine. I was thinking along the lines of fear of competition.

The other part, of course, I don't agree with as much. But I may be a bit biased there... ;)

Women can be fiercely competitive when it comes to that......most of my friends happen to be women and I can say that they are the biggest trash talkers on the planet. If a pretty girl walks into the room - forget about it......

It's not totally ludicrous, I guess, but at the same time, "Mexico" or "El Salvador" aren't the first countries I think of when I think "mail-order brides." And you have to admit that, wrong though it might be, "Mexico" is probably the first country that comes to anyone's mind, male or female, when they hear "illegal immigrant."

1 + 1 seems to be adding up to 3 here, and so I don't think that the Merc/ET-US 2004 Theory on Why Women Don't Like Illegals is right. ;)

It still adds up.....women hate other women, especially if they might be getting something they themselves want.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

hmmmm..i think reinhard has a sociological perspective on the situation.?

..i think you need to look at regions of the country via a poll.. i think less people be for the immigration packages in the soutwest and calif..etc,,and more for in new england..midwest...

I agree...having lived in both Texas and California...it is much harder to be neutral about illegal alien issues.

Interesting poll!

I found this quite telling:

(quoted from article)

One reason the public does not like legalizations is that they are skeptical of need for illegal-immigrant labor. An overwhelming majority of 74 percent said there are plenty of Americans to fill low-wage jobs if employers pay more and treat workers better; just 15 percent said there are not enough Americans for such jobs.

That is quite telling because it shows that the real problem are low wages and treatment of workers. According to this interpretation, illegals are those willing to put up with substandard labor standards. Funny thing is that the same people pushing the enforcement-only bill in regard to illegal immigrants are also refusing to raise minimum wage and pass legislation to enforce workplace safety or fair labor standards.

Guys, get over yourselves -- I'm sure you all dreaming about a ###### fight over your skinny white asses, but let's not project here. besides, don't the number of illegals in the country skew male anyway?

Anyways, although I have no idea why there might be a difference of opinion by gender, I'm pretty sure that men have as much to lose as women do -- those women's jobs have always been low-paid, where wages for traditional male jobs such as construction and factory jobs (that used to be well-paid)are in free fall.
