My fiance and I are trying to decide what bank accounts we will need and how many, but so far we haven't made any decision. I'm thinking we should have a joint savings account and separate checking accounts. And that I should keep the one I have in my country for a while (to pay taxes for this year for example).

I'm curious how you people handle your finances. Does all the money go to the same account, do you have 10 different ones?

Please explain your choices!

For people who are still apart, just like my fiance and I, you can choose what you think you will do once you move there.

What do you use the joint checking for? is it only for paying bills and then for everything else you use your own checking accounts?

We have 3 checking accounts...one in my name, one joint, and one in his name. But I had 2 before he came over, one which I used as savings. So we still have a small amount in that one all the time, then we pay all bills and extras from the joint account, and Sujeet just puts his money for gas and commuting needs and other bills in his name from that account and for transferring money to India. But since he just works and not me, we share all the money. We don't have my money and his money.

We have a joint savings account.

Yes Sujeet still has an active account in India.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

Yeah, for bills or other expenses we incur together, like going out, take out meals, purchases for our place or us, vacation...that sort of thing. The separate accounts are for our own bills like personal credit cards and our own "mad" money. I don't want to know how much he spends on his hobby, concerts, PlayStation games, and he doesn't want to know how much I spend on clothes, accessories, makeup, etc.... hehehe.

Hehe yes that's probably better not to know exactly sometimes ;)

So nobody has only 2 separate checking accounts?

I thought it was a good idea... We would define who pays what instead of having one more checking (and of course if sometimes one of us has not enough to pay then the other one would pay (it's still my money is his and his is mine, even though there are separate accounts). Would there be some bad things I haven't thought about in this idea?

We have 1 joint checking (used to be his), 1 separate checking (mine, the non USC), and 1 joint savings. But I managed all the bill payment & savings. I still have my old checking account in Indonesia. I used it for direct deposit of my last paycheck, I might close when we come back home since I have no use of it anymore.
