Nah, you can just keep sleeping.

probably the best choice. it don't seem like a major issue anyways.

you're right, human rights never are.......

imo it's not about human rights. it's about politicizing the olympics.

don't assume that is what it is about for those actually doing the protesting...

funny how it occurs during the torch carry......

It's an interesting irony that BY is dismissing the various Olympic protests as trivial nonsense while defending China's right to do as it pleases--which includes jailing people for protesting.

This obsession with rights after the 60's is what kills me. The US has much more pressing issues of its own to worry about than China and Tibet, like its imminent bankruptcy and plunge into 2nd world status. Like it being ranked almost last in literacy, Math and Science standards when compared to the rest of the developed world. That is what people need to seriously worry about. As it will eventually effect their lives.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Perhaps you're not aware that protests occurred outside the U.S. as well.

I know you can't resist every opportunity to note the U.S.'s myriad shortcomings, but again, it has little to do with the subject at hand.

Perhaps you could start a consultancy and instruct Americans as to what they should be concerned with. I'm sure it would be appreciated given your vast and varied experience with domestic and foreign policy priorities.

And what kills you about this "obsession with rights"? (and what obsession is this?)

They are not going bankrupt so they have time to protest.

Anything to do with rights. Stuff like equal marriage rights for oppressed lesbian Shih Tzus etc etc..Tibetan freedom is the latest BS bandwagon.

It's been an issue for about 60 years. That you weren't paying attention before now doesn't mean that others weren't.

From my email from the Tibetan community here in Chicago...

On Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 2:00 PM -5:00 PM: The Chicago community will protest for the release of Panchen Lama and all Tibetan political prisoners in Tibet.

All protesters will meet at 2:00 PM and thereafter we will march to the Chinese Consulate. The protest will continue until 5:00 PM at the Chinese Cosulate.

The 11th Panchen Lama, world's youngest political prisoner and missing since 1995, was born on April 25th, 1989. Please visit the web site of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery for more information on His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche.

Funny, I don't see any mention of the Olympics there...

Well, duh to that brother Charles... I doubt that the Chinese will allow Tibetans to be anywhere near the Olympics themselves OR for that matter, any media coverage of said events.

But yes... I'd like for SF to perhaps bring to light any protests from Tibetans during the selections phase for the Games.

I do remember as far back as 2000 seeing plenty of Anti-Beijing propaganda like:

610x.jpg

But that was in Paris, not Tibet. We all knew Paris wanted the games at that point...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

China is China. People don't have to like them or ever move there. I don't agree with protesting about their choice of government. Quite contradictory to our free society actually.

I don't agree with people disrupting somebody else's life to force their views. Liberals tend to do this a lot. Where freedom is starting to mean you do what we say or else will will disrupt your lifestyle. For example, You either do what 'we' consider is green or we burn down your buildings.

Damn straight I will disrupt someone else's life to "force" my views. What the Chinese government is doing and has done to the Tibetans is genocide.

And guess what? Their almost single-handed support of the Sudanese government that is committing the atrocities in Darfur is worth mentioning as well.

Maybe you can sit back and adopt an "it doesn't matter, live and let live" attitude, but I refuse to do that. That's what happened from 1939 to 1945. 11 million people were killed. There's a saying maybe you've heard before that you must "be the change you wish to see in the world" (Gandhi)...I believe in using my voice and my money and my time and my effort to make the change I wish to see.

I think life is sacred. I believe it is my right and my duty to protect it.
