Father mistakes his 8-year old son for a wild turkey, shoots him in the chest

The Belle Plaine, Minnesota, community is mourning the tragic death of eight-year-old Hunter Klaseus. A turkey hunting expedition Saturday evening went terribly wrong when father Tony mistook his son Hunter for wild game and fatally shot him in the chest.

Little eight-year-old Hunter loved many things in his short life. Hunting, fishing and hiking in the woods. His grandmother told reporters that Hunter called his dad "his best friend in the world".

The family is heartbroken and have indicated that this is a very difficult time for them. Hunter's mom Amber communicated with KARE-11 News via email, describing the incident as a "terrible tragedy" and describing her husband, Tony, as "the safest hunter I know!"

Just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, father and son headed out into the woods in search of wild turkey. Tony carried a 12 gauge shotgun. Both were dressed in camouflage for safety. As they approached the edge of the brush, Tony instructed his son to stay put and he headed off into the field in search of game. Unbeknownst to him, Hunter followed him until he was within 20 yards of his dad. What followed was heartbreaking. Tony, hearing his son approaching, mistook him for a turkey and fired. The shot hit Hunter in the chest. Tony called 911 from his cellphone and then carried his son a quarter of a mile to meet first responders.

Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.

I'm not a hunter or a gun owner....but don't you look before just firing blindly at a sound?

Regardless, I've no doubt it was an accident whether caused by stupidity or not, but it's tragice nonetheless.
