Hiyo! I know nobody's touched this thread for a while, but I have a few questions...

Okay, I'm planning well ahead (I haven't got my visa yet :'( nor my interview, just waiting for the Packet 3 or a response from the embassy) because I'll be caught up in exams and such around the time I'll be getting ready to move. I'm looking into pet carriers for Bean (my kitty cat, I want him in-cabin) and the volume restrictions for most of the airlines available are: 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm, or 22" x 16 " x 8 ".

How on Earth do I find a carrier of those dimensions? Most of them are a little taller than that, or does it not really matter because they're soft cases?

Please help!

Magpie.

Last flight over I saw a small dog in one of those soft sided carriers - it was bigger than my carry on! She got through with no problems! It must fit under the seat - and you will be fine!

Good Luck!

Thank you! I guess it's okay if it exceeds the height limit 'cause those things are squishy. Eeeeeee, I hope the Embassy gets back to me soon...

I thoroughly recommend Airpets at Heathrow for pet transportation. They handled everything so well, reassured me and it all went incredibly smoothly, even though the flight was 9 hours. I was worried my 7.5 year old greyhound would be stressed but she was fine. She loved the kennel staff there. The total cost was around £1500 but she is around 30 kilos, needed a larger crate and some shots prior to travelling. She handled it incredibly well.

I took my cat in this:

I got hubby to buy it in the US then bring it over with him as it was cheaper - I flew with Air France and it was no problem - my cat came in cabin with me and aside from crying a bit she was a gem :)

Hi everyone! I'm new to VJ. Me and my boyfriend are just starting to compile all the info needed together to file the I-129F and get things moving this spring. However, I have a dog, a labrador called Honey and have the worry of taking her over to the US hanging over my head aswell as all the other worries I'm sure you all know about. Does anyone have any experience or tale to tell about travelling over on their K1 with a dog in tow. Also any info about the process. Rabies shot, pet passport etc?? We'd all like to be fully prepared on the process. We'll be flying with Continental from Birmingham btw.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Would be good to contact Continental direct and see what policies they have on transporting animals, it can vary with different airlines. Plus talk to your vet about shots etc.

I sent my greyhound over before my actual approval.. was probably risky, but I would trust my boyfriend with her even if the worst happened with our case, and things here are stressful as it is. Here's what I did:

*Called the vet, arranged an appointment with a qualified vet to do a give her the rabies vaccine/pet passport/to be microchipped. Got her rabies-free certificate. Also got her some flea treatment just to be safe.

*Contacted Airpets, who would collect her from my house, house her in their kennels for 1 night (to make sure she had her meal, etc at the right time, so as not to soil her crate) The quote was £1500 total, which included her crate, (keep it, they're still useful after  ) the kennel stay, them picking her up, the flight, another required certificate (general health) that must be issued within 10 days of the dog travelling. It was expensive but definately less stress on both of us. My dog is 31 kilos - not sure if your lab will be any less, as they're a litter smaller/probably weigh less?

*Went to Airpets, measured my hound for her kennel, she LOVED the people which made me feel a lot better :star: Signed some papers, nothing too scary, just who should be allowed to pick her up at the destination, etc. I put both mine and my boyfriend's names, as I was flying out to visit him the previous day. They have to be 'naked' for their flight, but they can attach collars and tags to the outside of the crate and you're allowed to stuff blankets in to make it comfy.

She made it fine :) Peed in her crate, but I couldn't blame her because it was a new experience and the flight was also a bit delayed on take off, so the 8 hour flight became about 9. :( Poor girl. but she was so happy and wiggly when she got out and she loves America/my boyfriend's dog :D

Picking her up though was a NIGHTMARE... but only because we were silly and forgot where we parked :crying: When your dog arrives at the 'cargo center' you have to then go to the airport nearby to have some import papers approved.. which only took about 15min, but turned into about two hours thanks to us rushing in and not looking at parking garage signs o_o and when you know your beloved dog is a couple of miles away in a crate in a cargo center, it feels like the world is falling apart

I probably missed something important..

but yeah, I heavily recommend Airpets, their kennels are right next to the runway apparently too so the pets don't spend longer than necessary on the plane :)

I've heard that name thrown around. I have a miaow I'm going to take with me in the cabin, hopefully, but Airpets were recommended to me if I wanted to take my Bean in the cargo hold.

Best of luck with your doggie :star:.

By the way, on a completely different note (to those who've been keeping up with my own "tail") Beanie -- being a rescue cat -- used to have confidence issues. He's opened up considerably since he's been at the boarding cattery, and when I visited him today, he climbed into my lap of his own accord for the first time EVER. He was purring, drooling, rolling -- the whole lot. Usually he just stands in my lap and rubs his scent glands all over my face (which leads to thorough scrubbing later). It was just the most giddying feeling, and I wound up petting him there for two hours.

Magpie.

/edit: I'm in stitches, and I don't know why. I found this site absolutely hysterical and adorable.

I grew up around greyhounds and can't be without them :D If you went to a greyhound rescue and specified for a cat friendly hound, I don't think you'd have any trouble finding one. A lot of ex racers suprisingly can be de-trained very well :star:
