For the price, Hondas are probably your best bet. Civic or the little Fit. Less than the Toyotas, and come with more bells and whistles as standard features. Consumer reviews typically also put the Hondas slightly above the Toyotas.

the Fit is not that little.. actually it has more space than the civic.. and it gives 30mpg..

If you can't afford a hybrid, I'd recommend a new Toyota Corolla (for about $6,000 less) - excellent safety, maintenance, reliability rating and it averages 35mpg.

yup. Plus the $6000 extra for the hybrid will take you 120,000 miles to break even over buying a slightly less efficient non-hybrid. your choice.

Hybrids are worth while if you live in a city with start/stop traffic combined with a lot of idling. They are useless on highways or in places where there is little traffic.

Now once the plug in hybrids ship in, that will be a different story..
