If you can't afford a hybrid, I'd recommend a new Toyota Corolla (for about $6,000 less) - excellent safety, maintenance, reliability rating and it averages 35mpg.

What is your budget?

I have a Toyota Corolla and it gives me good mileage in the city and the freeway.

Very fuel-efficient. But if you have more money to spare, hybrid gives higher gas mileage.

Honda Civics are also very good when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Heh...so do we....2005. I've already put over 60,000 miles on it. That's why I bought an older Civic as a commute car. Now Jinky drives the Elantra.

Cool. My only complaint with it is that it's almost useless in snow.

Honda civic... we have 2 and they are both extremely good on gas. One even has 217000 miles on the original engine... still runs well for the mileage... and they both get 33 - 35 mpg...

yup. Plus the $6000 extra for the hybrid will take you 120,000 miles to break even over buying a slightly less efficient non-hybrid. your choice.
