Iran's largest selling newspaper has announced it is holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper, which is published by Tehran's conservative-run municipality, said on Monday.

He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he asserted.

Iran's fiercely anti-Israeli regime is supportive of so-called Holocaust revisionist historians, who maintain the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as well as other groups during World War II has been either invented or exaggerated.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's hardline president, prompted international anger when he dismissed the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as a "myth" used to justify the creation of Israel.

Mortazavi said Tuesday's edition of the paper will invite cartoonists to enter the competition, with "private individuals" offering gold coins to the best 12 artists - the same number of cartoons that appeared in the conservative Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Last week the Iranian Foreign Ministry also invited Tony Blair, the British prime minister, to Tehran to take part in a planned conference on the Holocaust, even though the idea has been branded by Blair as "shocking, ridiculous, stupid".

Blair also said Ahmadinejad "should come and see the evidence of the Holocaust himself in the countries of Europe", to which Iran responded by saying it was willing to send a team of "independent investigators".

Makes you wonder if the news coverage would have taken a different angle if there there were 100 people holding up those terrible signs and 1000 people protesting them. The KKK are hate preachers and have been made to look stupid by the moral masses over the years.....but it took time. They're a good example of what happens when hatred goes unchecked and nobody takes a stand. Many people protesting against the KKK at those rallies are white too. It would be incredible if the muslim world started making a more vocal and visible stance against the hate preachers in their own religion. This is a problem that must be tackled from within.

How moving would it be to see a thousand muslims walking the streets in protest of the embassy fires? Now that would be a powerful statement and something I'd love to see! I think you'd start to see the world rally around that movement very quickly.

It could never happen in the US. The Muslim community here is too small, too racially and socially diverse,

and too afraid, or at least not as shamelessly brazen as the Muslims in London.

Latest from the news over here regarding the muslim "student" who dressed so sickeningly as a suicide bomber, he has now apologised unreservedly for the hurt he has caused especially to the familys of the victims of the 7/7 bombings in London and to the British people.

But do you know why he has done that!!!!! because he is a convicted crack dealer who was sentenced in 2002 for crack dealing (I believe that drug dealing is totally against their religion and punishable by death)

and he was released "on licence" which means he can be re-arrested for this and sent straight back to jail.

No wonder he was so quick to apologise!!!!!!

From the newspapers" His criminal past emerged hours later when Scotland Yard officers went to interview him. They were told by his colleagues that he is still under supervision because of his drug convictions. Yard officers pulled back and returned to London.

A source said last night " This wasa a political dicision. This man is xxxxxxxx (states the county force here) and we did not want to barge in. Although he caused offence at the weekend, he is not thought to have committed any criminal act by dressing the way he did.

Last night it was not clear if xxxxxxxxx(county's police) were going to take further action

God Christ. Haven't read most of this post, to be fair, just saw the piccys at the beginning...but damn... I bet a lot of peaceful, proper Muslims are sitting there feeling very sad right now at the actions of a few nasty, misguided individuals.

They need to confront the criminal elements that hide in their midst in public. That would be a loud and strong action, a signal and a message that many people of many faiths could and would get behind.

Maybe there are just too many people in the world now, to be "controlled" by organized religion... That may seem anit-religion, but it's not meant to be. Thousands of years ago, when there were fewer people, religion meant coming together.

Now we're all reproduced so much that well...maybe it's all falling apart, even with the added "net" of online and telephonic communication. Maybe this is just the beginning of a crack that'll spread across the paper thin shield of organized religion that has held different sections of the world together tenuously for the last God only knows how long.

Perhaps the different sections of humanity will crack apart like a biscuit now, and have to re-from somehow in a different way.

And no, I am not on anythign this morning, it just occurred to me and I wanted to put that out there
