I wonder whether you could lock them up for Breach Of The Peace without infringing on their civil rights.

God, that's shocking behaviour.

And yes, Newnight is a British news programme, shown (oddly enough) at night!

Does the UK prosecute people for hate speech? I have no idea, so I'm asking.

What is so angering the people of the UK (many good muslims included) is the fact that these people are brandishing placards which are clearly an incitement to murder and this is now against the law in the UK, yet they have been allowed to get away with it.

The police are now saying that they have recorded all the protests and will take action this week, that statement would be laughable if it were not so sad as probably a vast amount of the protesters could have been failed asylum seekers and this government have lost most of them anyway ! , so how do they hope to take action against people they have no idea who they are or where they are!!!!

As for the "student" who dressed as a suicide bomber, he should be found, his papers and his right to study in the UK taken away from him and deported with a life time ban.

It is the good muslims, that respect other religions, respect other people and the country that they now call home, that I feel for, the bad ones are only contributing in the wrong way to peoples beliefs about Islam. At least major leading figures in the muslim community here are now speaking out, which is good.

But no matter which way it is looked at it is still sickening that they were allowed to carry those disgusting placards

As I recall, we do have some laws against "Inciting Racial Hatred". That's probably the closest you can get. It's such a grey area, because of the whole "freedom of speech" thing.

That would indeed be interesting to know. Better believe though that these mobs won't be jailed. Any attempt to do so will have them and their likes scream "freedom of speech" which, of course, includes to threaten to anihilate a whole continent as long as it ain't their's.

A very good point!

You're probably right. Like munchkins (am I the only one who feels weird calling someone I don't even know that?) said, if the police were serious about enforcing this new law they have, they would have acted at the time the crime occurred. Not just took pictures of the crime while it happened, let the perps disappear and then act.

"Incitement to murder" laws have been passed and what the demonstrators showed was a clear offence of breaking that law, and the march should have been disbanded or arrests made. If the boot had been on the other foot and it had been the BNP carrying placards of a similar nature, you can be sure they would have been grabbed and in jail before they could say boo. As for the hate speeches, there are cases going through the courts now, but with this countries ill advised "Human rights" law, there is total abuse of the system.

Sad reflection of our times and incompetent government.

This does further damage to the muslim community. The shame here is that I think there is a perception that nobody in the muslim world wants this stuff to end. There isn't a figure that is very public with a lot of media exposure that is speaking out. All we see is people advocating murder and no outrage in the muslim community. This is either a failure of the media or a lack of muslim leadership.

Oh how we miss Martin Luther King, Jr.

I was just thinking that myself, Mercy. The Muslim world really needs someone like MLK to stand up and have a voice to the rest of the world and show the rest of the world what the religion is truly about. If there were a figure head like that, then perhaps there would be more reporting on the peaceful protests that occur from peaceful Muslims about Muslims who misrepresent the their religion.

Unfortunately, starting to speak up now (a few torched embassies, a few dead and many massive screams for murder and anihilation into the debacle) would seem too little too late for actual damage control. The Muslim community ought unmistakenly say no to violence and expose those as traitors that don't know anything but violence. We're far from that, I'm afraid...
