Hmmm.... Does anything think this 'limited time' stuff is a load of #######. Lucas is clearly milking the dying DVD market before one of the new formats takes over, so he can release yet another edition.

Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy on DVD!

2 Channel stereo... what a crime.

I disagree. The fans were clamoring for this, and he emphatically stated two years ago that he had no intention of releasing the originals. But the fanboys didn't like his revisionism; they want to see Han shoot first, so there ya go. Also Lucas likes to make lots of money, so it's win-win.

I won't have to buy it cause I have two laserdisc versions of the originals. Do need to sit down and make DVDs of them though.

The fans have been demanding it but from the release info I'd say its 100% certain that they will be re-released as part of some sort of boxed set later on.

Special editions have full digital sound and picture mastering, but the originals are going to have 2 channel sound?

Yay for Star Wars fans! Woohoo!

Can you tell I'm a fan?

Won't get this set though, already have the new version on DVD, and the original on tape (even if I don't have a VCR anymore, I can still get someone to put it in a DVD for me). :P

I hate the added scene in the altered version of Episode 4 with Jabba and Han at Mos Eisley. Talk about an idiotic scene. "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being."

HUH??

The altered ones, for that reason, bug the shite out of me.

It's the digital effects. When they were doing them in 1995-1996 they pretty basic and far from photo-realistic. What looked amazing in 1997 is pretty cartoonish in 2005. Whenever I watch it, they really stand out - its digital graffiti!

Interesting, the 2004 DVD set actually features a different edit of the movies than the special editions from 1997. They feature updated special effects, they also added a few things (Like Hayden Christensen appearing at the funeral scene at the end of Return of the Jedi):

Jabba the Hutt in episode 4 got re-rendered and looks better than he did, though that scene is still far from perfect. That part where they had to have Han step on Jabba's tail (because in the original footage, Jabba was a human) makes the whole scene ridiculous - its like kicking the Godfather up the #######, you just wouldn't do it!

They also changed the scene with Han shooting Greedo, so that you see him dodge slightly before shooting. Again looks better than before, but it was still a bad idea. Apparently Lucas thought that shooting first, made Han Solo more villainous than he wanted them to be.

Still if you own a home theater system, these new 'original edits' are going to sound decidedly average. The fact that he couldn't use the digitally mastered versions is somewhat telling IMO.

I won't get it because of the sound to tell you to truth. Why on earth would I force myself to watch something with 2 channel sound???

Lucas may be a money grubbing you know what, but he's a genius. He suckered in our generation with the original trilogy, then we wait 20 some years and hear that they are doing the prequels, and that way our kids are now suckered in, and that doesn't just mean movies, it means merchandising too. :P

I remember when they remasted the stuff on VHS and they showed the difference between original cut and remastered video, and I prefer the remastered versions to the originals.
