How long you can drive on a foreign licence differs from state to state. You will need to look up the state you are moving to and check their laws in this regard. Some allow you drive for up to a year on a foreign licence, others 3 months. It's worth looking up.

As another poster stated, here in CA once you take up residency, you only have two weeks to get a CA state DL. Check out the rules for your state!

It can be such an unfair area - Her in CA - you have moved here (and, told the BCCIS you are a resident) - so, within two weeks can't legally drive using your foreign license, yet, the DMV won't give you a license until you can get an EAD & SS.........big limbo period. I wonder how many new immigrants are flaunting this law - out of necessity, and the inability to drive legally - or, simply being unaware.

Just a quick question: my fiance will be arriving in May with a K1 visa. Can he get a driver's license after he has a social security number (assuming he passes the written test and driving test) or does he need to wait for after he has been approved for an adjustment of status?

He will be blown away by all the strict traffic laws here as well as the idea that a STOP sign actually implies that the person needs to stop......there is so much in store for him.

Does anyone have any info on this?

The stop sign implies that it means to stop? That's funny,,I didn't know all those rules in the drivers manual were only implied. I really shouldn't have gotten all those speeding tickets if those rules are only implied. Those cops that stopped me should have know better.

(Based on traffic in China) Then, there's the concept of paying attention to the lines on the road. Everybody inside of those lines actually drives the same direction!!!

What really worries me the most about Li is that drivers in America don't expect pedestrians to just walk out into traffic.

it depends on the MVD office you go to. I was able to get a drives license valid for the duration of my K1 visa, just by showing them my visa and passport. Its worth a try at least! Then extend the license once you have EAD/GreeN Card

Now I know I have been living in India a long time, not only did that video not make me cringe, all I could think of was: "Where is that - the traffic is soooo light?!" The one thing that I can say about traffic here is that I have not seen too much road rage (unless there is an accident, and then look out!) and because there is so much traffic, you never really go too fast, so generally accidents are not too major.

Michigan has a fairly new rule that only Permanent Residents can get a DL, not sure what H1B holders do to get to work, our state is not too public transport user-friendly!

If we end up in a place where Ritesh can get a motorcycle, I fear for his life as he is accustomed to the Indian 'flows like multiple rivers' kind of driving and will probably freak a lot of American drivers out! We watch Cops on a regular basis here so that he has an idea of what and what not to do when it comes to traffic and traffic stops. (No outrunning the police when you don't feel like paying the perfunctory bribes!)

I am in FL and was able to obtain a learner's permit while waiting for my GC.I am now driving around as long as I have a 21yr old licensed driver with me. I am doing better and learning from my mistakes. So far so good. My husband is so patient teaching me.

And yes even if the intersection is clear if there is a STOP sign. . . MUST STOP. Goodluck
