Child porn accused 'looking for Jolie'

AN Adelaide man had only wanted to see actor Angelina Jolie naked when he stumbled across child porn and downloaded it from the internet, a court was told.

John Martin Cheney, 43, faces a jail term after pleading guilty in the South Australian District Court to possessing 179 images of children, half of them naked and semi-naked.

The charges were laid after the pictures were found by a computer repairer in June 2006.

Mr Cheney had been "looking at adult porn" when he was lured towards the child porn sites by pop up images, his lawyer Stephen Ey said in sentencing submissions today.

"He was actually looking for Angelina Jolie and then these other pop-ups occurred, and then access, out of curiosity, took place from thereafter," Mr Ey said.

"The offending occurred at at time when he was depressed, drinking too much, he was not working, and he had an operation on his genitalia leading up to this discovery by this computer man.

"He had too much time on his hands."

Mr Cheney thought the pictures would harm no one, but he now realised child pornography was not a victimless crime, Mr Ey said.

"He said he had been in slow development class, and without being too critical of my client, my client is no rocket scientist."

Mr Ey urged Judge Marie Shaw to consider mitigating circumstances - such as his remorse and cooperation with police - when she sentences Mr Cheney on May 6.

He said Mr Cheney was suffering because his unlimited access to his nine-year-old daughter had been cut and he could now see her only on supervised visits.
