New Jersey lawyer faces trial for role in prostitution ring

by Guy Sterling

Thursday April 17, 2008, 6:39 PM

A New York judge today refused to throw out the case against a prominent New Jersey defense lawyer accused of involvement in a high-profile prostitution ring.

In addition to scheduling trial for Sept. 8, Judge Thomas Farber of the New York State Supreme Court also set a trial date of Sept. 8 in the case against Paul Bergrin, who allegedly was involved in the ring for a year and counseled it about concealing illicit profits.

Bergrin, 51, of Marlboro Township, had been hopeful of at least getting some of the charges dropped, particularly money laundering. He declined to comment after the hearing.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges he helped a client operate the NY Confidential call-girl service between March 2004 and March 2005 and also gave advice on what should be done with the proceeds.

He was charged in indictments with money laundering, conspiracy, promoting prostitution and misconduct by an attorney.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
