If things go well for us, I'll be getting tickets for both Li and her son this summer.

I've come to the same conclusion. Getting the round trip tickets is cheaper.

We'll cancel the return flight and "fail to reschedule" before the expiration date.

DUMB DUMB DUMB :bonk:

No wonder the airlines are going bankrupt.

Is it really necessary to cancel it? Is it a big deal if you just don't use the return leg one time? We were just gonna let it pass without a call or anything. Maybe I'll call the airline and try to get a credit voucher like somebody suggested. Good idea, thanks.

I was going to book her "return" leg for like 5-6 months from now when we go back, but then every time we travel to her country, she'd be coming and I'd be going. She would always be using the "from" ticket and I'd be using the "to" ticket to Costa Rica. It would get too confusing.

Its crazy how they do that. I bought my fiancee a round trip ticket form Kazakhstan to the US for $1500.00 US. One-way ticket was $4800.00. More than 3 times as much.

Same here.... $4000. from Moscow oneway vs. $1200. round trip. Where's the logic?

Rather than the illegal method of trying to let someone else use it, I wonder if you can phone the airline with a semi-legit excuse and see if they will let you get a "voucher" or something so you can use that other leg towards a flight later on.

I tried this with a round-trip ticket that I did not use the return on - they were willing to credit me half of the fare I paid, but, only on a one-way ticket on the same route I did not fly - which, was really of no value to me at all. But, I would think airline policies on this may vary - so, it i defineitly worth a phone call and a few minutes of time

I've found a very good travel agent who specializes in travel to China. He has consistently come up with better prices than I could get on my own.

However, for purchasing air tickets for Li & her son this summer, he said I could have Li talk to the airline companies in Chinese and get much better prices than he could get from America (he also speaks Chinese). I tried this for our domestic travel in China, (we're going to Shanghai) Li got tickets for less than half the best price I could find for the exact same flight using the internet.

I really dislike playing the air ticket game. That's why I use a travel agent.

The difference generally has to do with fare classes. That determines how much you have to pay to refund or change dates, and how many miles you get.

If a one way and RT ticket are of the same fare class, than the one way will be cheaper. But often, the RT ticket is sold at a lower fare class than one way tickets making it cheaper.

I got pretty lucky flying one-way with LTU from Hamburg, Germany to LAX for about $355. I have no idea why one-way tickets are generally so expensive. I can usually always get a good deal on a flight whether it's one-way, or round-trip, but you have to set aside some time to do lots of researching. *g* Just have to know all the different airlines/low-priced ticket sites/etc. and then sit down, play with dates/times and you can usually find a good deal. Unless you have special arrangements, be flexible. Anyway, I am going a little bit off-topic. Sorry. *g*
