Driving test in New York?

I have been offered a job within my company in California so we are considering leaving NYC and relocating this summer. This will obviously mean I need to get my US drivers license - I have a valid UK license and know I need to take the written and road test here and was just hoping for some advice from anyone who has taken the test in or near NYC? How hard was the roadtest? (It has been a while since my UK one!) I am not too thrilled by the prospect of having to take it in the city so wonder if I could do it elsewhere, as long as it is in NY state? I don't want to put it off until we get to CA as I may need to be driving straight away and want to be legal!

yea, the tests within the city are much harder than outside...i would recommend going to the staten island dmv, because i have heard they are MUCH easier than the other boroughs...i dont know if you can take it outside of the city, but you can definitely take it in a different borough...you must be able to parallel park in pretty tight spaces and also do a k-turn (3-point turn)...thats about it really...good luck and yay brooklyn!!

I took mine upstate, but in a city ... I'd take it outside NYC only because I would never drive in the city in a million years. You have to be able to parallel park and do a three point turn, but those were the only hard parts...but my examiner was pretty lenient.

Thanks everyone, I'll be investigating taking it in the boroughs - apparently the bronx is ok.I have no intention or need to drive in the city so would rather not put myself through a harder test for no reason...Thanks again, so good to hear from those who have 'been there and done that'!
