I have a quick question. When I leave SA on my K1 visa, and get to the US, should I have taken out medical travel insurance and if so for how long? Or do I apply straigh away once there onto my fiances plan or what do I actually do? Accident prone, so I defnitely need coverage.

Thank you

When I came to the U.S. with my k-1 Visa, I took out emergency medical insurance for the month I was going to be here before we got married.

My husband's medical insurance did not allow him to put me on until we were married, so I needed some insurance until then.

Check if your fiance's plan will allow him to add a fiance. Most will only add you if you are a spouse.

Good luck.

Its unlickly you will be able to be added to your fiance's insurance until you are married....

Travel insurance may not work as you have to have an address in the country where you are leaveing... and they wont cover for someone who is emigrating.....

You can checkout short term insurance for immigrants but it is not cheap...

I like most just had to hope I did not need hospital/doctor care untill after we were married and I could be added to hubby's plan....

It depends.... SOME employers permit insurance coverage for domestic partners and the domestic partner definition typically encompasses fiances. My company does this but it is not cheap so I am getting us married fast (today, actually!) so I can put her under my insurance plan as my spouse ASAP.

There are some absolute bare-bones, huge-deductible plans you can get if you can't afford the $350-or-so a month for a decent plan. I've seen ones for as little as $40 a month. They're not very good, but if you have a serious accident you will have much of it covered.

If you are going to be driving, be sure to get car insurance, which will cover you in case of a car accident.

I bought insurance for myself after I arrived from SRI (http://www.sri.com). Paid $261 for 3-month blocks. Nothing fantastic but it made my husband and me feel better. But I didn't renew my policy after Dec because things got financially tight at home. Went insurance-free for 4 months before I bought insurance from Anthem through a staffing agency that I work for.

I couldn't get an insurance from my own country when I came to the US, because they would only cover tourists not immigrants. And my husband's insurance would only allow to add me after we're married, or they would let him add me as his significant other but only if he could show a proof that we were living together for a year at least, which was of course impossible since I came from another country. So I wasn't covered when I came to the US. Everything went ok until 2 weeks before our wedding I developed some bad sickness and I needed a doctor. We came up with this solution: we signed the marriage papers 2 weeks before our actual wedding party and I was added to my husband's insurance the next day and then I was able to use that insurance to go to the doctor. Now we celebrate 2 wedding anniversaries each year :P So if all this insurance issue bothers you and you can't get coverage from anywhere then maybe you can sign the marriage papers right after you arrive to the US (this will also speed your immigration process a bit, since you will be able to file for AOS/EAD after the marriage) and get added to your husband's insurance, and have the wedding party later.

We intend to marry quickly (at the courthouse), then get him on my insurance and send in our AOS papers. We'll have an actual 'wedding' later. :)

Perhaps you could do the same if the immigrant insurance is too pricey.
