Hello there,

I was wondering if i can start school with a K1. My idea was to use the 3 months delay during the time we are waiting for AOS to not loose my time and to start a learning program while there.

Also, would i be acceptable for student loan that are for US student only ??

Thanks for your answers !

You need to have a green card before you can apply for federally funded loans. I think you are eligible to apply for private loans (I don't recommend this, they're interest rates are variable and much higher than the government loans).

Starting school on a K1 can be tricky depending on the school. Call the school(s) you're interested in and ask. When my hubby was looking to enroll at a community college one branch said that they would refuse him because he didn't have a student visa (I tried explaining that he was married to a USC, and was waiting to receive a green card.) The other two branches, said it was fine.

The policy at the university where I work is that if you don't have your permanent resident card yet, you would need to apply as an international student and get an F-1 visa.

You might be able to register for non-credit courses.

Best thing is to talk to the international student services department of the school or schools you are interested in attending, especially if they have deadlines for applications.

Hope this helps!

Some trade schools may be more forgiving - so you can try them. Most accredited schools will require you to have either a greencard or student visa. Also consider this - the tuition in an accredited school is going to be non-resident - normally 4 to 5 times the regular tuition. So, if you can afford the time lag - get your greencard first, establish residency - generally 6 months of living in the state and then join a school for the in-state tuition. Good Luck

the school i want to join is an online school with accreditation but have the same fee for everyone, so no worries on that part.... there is not the general intl student #######.

my concern is more about the loan and the legality of joining a school while aos/ead process.

I hope this is of some relevance to you. I applied to law school while waiting on NOA2 and I was assured by admissions at my number 1 choice school that a K-1 was sufficient to study, even before we got married.

I think it comes down to the policies of the individual school.

Timeline for K-1:

Feb 8th: NOA1 from VSC

Apr 14th: NOA2.
