Three Plainfield men have been indicted on charges of murder, felony murder, robbery, bias intimidation and other crimes in connection with the November death of a 45-year-old North Plainfield man who immigrated to America from Guatemala, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

Muhammad Glasper, 21, and brothers Gregory Greene, 20, and Willie Greene, 19, also were indicted on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

...

Union County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Henn said the three men were driving in a car "poppy hunting," a term that refers to the act of preying on a Hispanic victim with robbery as the motive.

In a written statement, Henn said Willie Greene was driving the car while the other two defendants were in the back. The assistant prosecutor said Glasper and Gregory Greene got out of the vehicle when they saw Lazaro Tista, 45, walking alone on Grove Street in Plainfield around midnight Nov. 4.

"The men struck their victim in the head with an aluminum baseball bat, robbed him and fled," Henn said.

Tista died at the scene of massive head trauma. He leaves behind a wife and several children who live in his native country.

...

First-degree bias intimidation carries a penalty of 15 to 30 years in prison. If the men are found guilty of murder, they face life in prison.

I thought their use of the phrase "poppy hunting" was kinda funny seeing how I am 99% sure it is actually "papi hunting".

"Papi hunting" has a different meaning you know.I never knew it meant to commit hate crimes.

Unfortunately, crimes like these are on the rise because theives see immigrants as easy targets because they always carry large amounts of cash on them and they very seldom reprt the crimes to the police for fear they will get deported.I have some stories that would make your hair curl. :(

Sigh.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

i.e. 15-30 for that, life in prison, but we both know life in prison usually ain't. if the 15-30 runs concurrently instead of consecutively, they'll probably be parolled around what, 25 years max?

Just out of interest, how do you decide, just reading one article on a case, how lax or not a sentence is? The point, as I understand it, of criminal justice sentencing is that each case is tried on its individual merits and each person found guilty is sentenced according to the particular circumstance of that case.

Although there must be occaisons where sentancing doesn't mirror the circumstances of the crime surely most of the time the sentancing does in fact fit the circumstances? If not, the system isn't working and needs to be fixed but I haven't seen a great call for changes in sentancing or have I just missed this?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
