Just a quick observation. When I filed my exit return a few years back I included a letter requesting a full year's worth of tax credits rather than the pro-rated amounts to the date I left (which is listed as an option in the Emigrants Guide). I was allowed to do this since my total income for the whole year was Canadian based - I had no US based income. When I received my rebate, they had pro-rated the amount after all, and it was less than the amount should have been. I contacted my former MPs office who faxed me a permission authorization form which I filled out and faxed back, and they investigated for me. CRA asked me to re-send my 'letter' which I did through my MPs office, and I finally received the remainder of the rebate I was due.

For those who receive less than you expect, definitely investigate why and then, if necessary, don't hesitate to ask your former MPs for their assistance in getting the error corrected, if one was made.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Yeah, I checked my status online and my return is HALF what it was supposed to be. My basic personal exemptions are 49% of the full year's worth of personal exemption (even though I moved at the end of August).

I filed for Section 217 with no US income too.

First EI, now this. *groan*. Thank goodness Texas doesn't have a state income tax. I'll update the thread as news progresses.

Does everyone have a "Surtax for non-residents and deemed residents of Canada" line?? I think that's where my 700$ went.. it appears that they charged me a sur tax for being a non-resident when the money I made in Canada was still as a resident (because I didn't receive my greencard until after my ei was finished.. GAH!

Are people finding out about their returns from E-Pass? Money just deposited in your account? I'm just wondering if anyone has gotten paperwork, or a notice of assessment in the snail mail first. My account still shows received, and no date.

Just phoned up the international tax phone number for "questions about my assessment" (1-800-267-5177)

Instantly got the message "Mailbox for inquiries is full. Please phone later."

Lovely. Juuuuuust lovely. First I got shafted on the 90 days of EI. Now Canada wants to give me back half my income tax return. I didn't have any US income in 2007 and didn't get my greencard until Feb 2008.

I just had a random deposit in my CIBC bank account.. I then checked e-pass.. it was there, no paper yet. :)

I can't remember when I mailed mine to CRA. But it was received April 30th. Assessed on May 12th. Information updated online to show my return on May 16th.
