Hi, my first post. Great site. Anyways. My fiance is here on the VWP. We just got engaged last week. We are planning to go ahead and get married while here on the VWP (July) rather than wait. We of course will file the 130, AOS, EAD, etc....but what I want to know is can he apply for a SSN while waiting for the EAD? He needs an SSN to (1) be added to my bank account, (2) apply for a mortgage, and (3) get a driver's license.

If he doesn't have to wait for the EAD...what is the process?

Going to need EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned work authorized SSN.

Process? Applying for SSN or EAD card?

Thanks. We aren't looking to get a work authorized SSN...he is self employed and his work is internet based, so that isn't a concern. We simply need the SSN so that we can add him to my bank accounts, get a driver's license and buy a house. We want to sell my current house and buy one together, but can't get a mortgage without his SSN. Is it possible to get a non working SSN before getting the EAD?

Needing an SSN for school aid or enrollment, private health insurance, banking, tax purposes or to be issued a state professional or driver’s license are NOT valid non work reasons for needing an SSN.

The following are valid nonwork reasons:

-- Receive Social Security benefits

-- Receive Medicaid

-- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

-- Food Stamps

-- State/Local General Assistance Benefits

You can find additional information regarding a nonwork need for an SSN on the SSA Website at:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203510

So it's pretty much a work authorized SSN or nothing for an alien.

When am I legally required to provide my Social Security number:
