It's about $3.80 here (thanks in part to CA taxes). I have a little car and pay maybe $15 more for a tank that I did 5 months ago, as a result gas prices aren't such a big deal to me even though I live in one the most expensive areas. It's not breaking my bank but I can see how it's a problem if I had a big car/truck.

So yeah - dumb idea

What kind of car are you driving, R - if you don't mind me askin? :)

$350/year, seems so unimpressive. Could mawilson be right?

Actually, mawilson could have a little shopping excursion at Whole Foods with that....

Groceries for a week. :innocent:

Your "little car" gets what, 25 mpg in the city, 30-35 mpg highway?

As opposed to 12-20 mpg for a big truck/SUV?

Not a big deal.

a real life example:

truck - 17 mpg

camaro - 25 mpg

vibe - 30 mpg

round trip for myself or nessa is 22 miles. gas is currently $3.25 a gallon here

truck = 1.29 gallons = $4.19/day....per week = $20.95

camaro = .88 gallons = $2.86/day..per week = $14.30

vibe = .73 gallons =$2.37/day.......per week = $11.85

i save $6.65 by driving the camaro all week instead of the truck....

Truck - 20mpg

Volvo - 20 mpg

ZX2 - 30mpg

round trip for work - 120 miles. Gas is currently $3.48/gallon here.

Truck = 6 gallons = $20.88/day - $104.40/week

Volvo = Ditto (if it were licensed. lol)

ZX2 = 4 gallons = $13.92/day - $69.60/week

I'd save a lot of money driving Mags' car....if she'd let me.

$5428.80/year vs. $3619.20/year

I love the Corolla...I've owned several in my lifetime. The sporty S model looks cool.

Maybe I'm crazy, but why won't the oil companies invest in and attempt to develop alternative methods of power? It would be smart (and to their benefit) to do this, since one day we will run out of oil and then we'll have to do something else for power. But if a company thought ahead and had some other power source developed and brought it out when that happened, they'd not only look like a hero, but bring in tons upon tons of money.

Most oil companies already do. Here is something from BP's Web site:

Alternative Energy, which BP launched in 2005, consolidates all of our low-carbon activities in the power sector

Solar, wind, hydrogen power and gas-fired power technologies have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and we believe we can create a profitable, high-growth, global business in the course of the next decade.

About 40% of the world’s CO2 emissions come from power generation, twice as much as from the transport sector. But almost half of the power plants that the world is expected to need by 2020 have not yet been built. As pressure mounts for action on climate change, we believe national and regional governments and local utility companies will increasingly look to build plants that use alternative energy technologies.

Solar power

Harnessing the power of the sun is something we’ve been doing for a long time. BP was the first company to take solar technology used in space and develop it for everyday use. That was more than 30 years ago. Today we are one of the world’s leading solar power companies, with installations in more than 160 countries.

BP Solar designs, manufactures and markets solar electric systems for a wide range of alternative energy applications in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

Visit the BP Solar site

How does solar power work?

Wind power

Wind is one of the fastest growing sources of low-carbon power, growing at an average rate of at least 20% every year.

BP’s wind business operates two wind farms in the Netherlands and we’re planning to build more large-scale wind farms in the US. We aim to be one of the leading wind power developers by 2015.

Hydrogen power

Hydrogen power plants use fossil fuels to create hydrogen and use carbon capture and storage technologies to capture 90% of the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions, which are then stored permanently in deep geological formations such as oil and gas reservoirs or saline formations.

Together with our partners, we’ve announced plans for the world’s first two commercial hydrogen plants with carbon capture and storage at Peterhead in Scotland and Carson in California.

Gas-fired power

Using natural gas as an alternative energy source produces half as much carbon dioxide as traditional coal-fired power.

We participate in 12GW of gas-fired alternative energy power plants, enough to power over 10 million typical homes. We have successfully developed five new power plants in the past five years in the US, UK, Vietnam, South Korea and Spain.

I am waiting to buy this:

Honda FCX Clarity - Hydrogen

Now if only there was more funding for research on this stuff from American companies for their vehicles.

Edited by Boo-Yah!

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

What, no Australian cars? :P

I have a Holden Monaro and I love it!

Have you seen the new Pontiac G8 from there. My friend worked on that car.

Yes - it's a fantastic car. Very powerful and quick, pure RWD goodness.

And, it being a GM, that's what it will need lots of..... work. GM = Goddamn Morons

The worst piece of ####### cars ever made, except for the Yugo and Dodge Omni.

Well, that's some statement for someone who owns a FORD = Found On the Road Dead. :P

*I* don't own a Ford....Mags does. I have a Toyota Tacoma. ie: probably the only truck actually MADE in the US. Call me crazy, but I'd rather give my dollars to American workers than Mexican or Canadian ones (no offense). The workers and dealership make more on the vehicle than the "home office" does, so which is more important? Paying American workers but giving a little to a Japanese CEO or paying Mexican workers and giving a little to an American CEO? I'd rather give my money to the American workers. F##k the CEOs.

(and Ford is:

Fix Or Repair Daily

Found Oil Ruining Driveway

F##ked Over Rebuilt Dodge

Found On Road Dead

Although....I've worked for both. GM is the worser of the two.)
