McCain suggests a gas tax holiday from Memorial Day to Labor Day - also suggests wealthier seniors pay higher premiums for Medicare prescription drugs

To help people weather the downturn immediately, McCain urged Congress to institute a "gas-tax holiday" by suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

...

Among other proposals, McCain said he would:

- Require more affluent people - couples making more than $160,000 - enrolled in Medicare to pay a higher premium for their prescription drugs than less-wealthy people.

You know, for all the biatching and whining about gas prices, I don't see too many people downsizing their trucks/suvs/big cars for fuel efficient alternatives - maybe it would be better to offer an incentive to do so instead of saying they should just continue consuming as normal

Gas is in the range of 3.35 here at the moment and is projected to hit 4.00 by the summer and McCain comes up with this grand idea to shave 18 cents off a gallon? That's some populism. Come to think of it, this would save me enough every ten tanks or so to buy a couple of movie tickets. Thanks Johnny!

Much wisdom in this reply :)

It's about $3.80 here (thanks in part to CA taxes). I have a little car and pay maybe $15 more for a tank that I did 5 months ago, as a result gas prices aren't such a big deal to me even though I live in one the most expensive areas. It's not breaking my bank but I can see how it's a problem if I had a big car/truck.

So yeah - dumb idea

Maybe I'm crazy, but why won't the oil companies invest in and attempt to develop alternative methods of power? It would be smart (and to their benefit) to do this, since one day we will run out of oil and then we'll have to do something else for power. But if a company thought ahead and had some other power source developed and brought it out when that happened, they'd not only look like a hero, but bring in tons upon tons of money.

Businesses are working on it and as soon as they have something marketable you will hear about it.

In the meanwhile, we have to live with McCain's gastaxholiday

General CO-PAYs are going up anyway. Maybe the forum seniors can shed some light on how that will affect their pocketbooks.

No kidding. If a Democrat was to make any such suggestion, the Republican mob would be screaming: "See, all they want is to take more of your money".

So do you oppose it?

Your "little car" gets what, 25 mpg in the city, 30-35 mpg highway?

As opposed to 12-20 mpg for a big truck/SUV?

Not a big deal.
