My family name has "Ñ" on it. In my passport, DFA just typed "N" and my NBI is the same. In my CENOMAR and BC, it is "Ñ" Now I'm confused what to type on my DS forms. I planned to type the usual "Ñ" since that is the proper way to write it. Will this not cause a problem? Anyone has the same case? Your help is very much appreciated.

Got an answer for my own question. Just read this from the Evisa Application Forms :D

"Instructions for completing an electronic visa application form:

1. Enter the information requested into the appropriate spaces on the form. Please answer all questions. Your answers must be in English and must use English characters. Letters like ñ, é, ü, ç are not recognized by the system. Please enter names like Muñoz and Sémonin as Munoz and Semonin. "

Anyway, for those who will ask the same question in the future, this thread will be a reference. :D

Hi Riza! How are you? Can you help me? I have also the same case.. I have an "Ñ" on my surname.. my BC and passport has "Ñ" on it. Now, I am filling-up my DS Forms, I'm confused if I'll put Ñ or N.. I know in DS-156 it has an instruction to put only N since it is electronic, but how about in other forms? Like DS-156K, DS-157 and D-230? Thanks.

Hi Kring!

Just use the regular "N" in all forms. :)

All documents must be completed in English, embassy requires it, which is why on the DS-156 it will only allow N.

Sorry but just like to confirm since I have the same issue since I have an "ñ" in my family name in my birth certificate. When I went to NBI to secure my NBI clearance I was insisting that I'd want to have an AKA but they said they don't have "ñ" in their system or database. They just said that if it will be an issue at the Embassy, then present the 221G letter to them. Huh? So I'd be wasting precious time if that will happen.

Thanks.

You are over thinking this. Have you used n rather than ñ ever in the Philippines. If not you have no reason to list it as an AKA. AKA stands for "Also Known As" If you are not known by that name you do not need it.

I've always used 'ñ' in all my records (school records, PRC license, etc).

Ok I won't stress myself further. Thank you.

I officially asked uscis this issue.  they came back with something like this,

¨We have the correct information in our data systems. Please note that our database can only handle a limited number of characters per field which may lead to an incomplete name on generated notices. Additionally, special characters such as a tilde are not supported in our data systems. The document is still valid and therefore, you may continue to use the receipt notice you have now.¨

My fiance first name is Niña. Goodluck to you!!!!
