DMV Test but I didn't get the driving permit

I just got back from DMV to get my driving permit. I took the written exam and passed it but unfortunately, they did not give me the permit. They said that my identification IDs don't match with what is on the INS record. Something causes a "hit"..

The IDs I used were :

1. military ID (with married name)

2. EAD card (with married name)

3. SSN card (with maiden name)

4. marriage certificate

3. SSN card

The lady said that the problem they are encountering is my middle initial. She asked for documents that will show/prove what does my middle initial stands for. So I showed them my birth certificate but she just spurned it for the reason that they don't accept international BC and passport. I handed my SSN with my maiden name on it but she asked why I haven't changed my name on it yet. Duh! Told her that I just received my EAD and that's the next thing we'll do after DMV. The next thing she gave me was a paper stating that I need to go to a S.A.V.E. (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements ) office to verify my identification.

Is this a common incident getting a driving permit? What do they exactly check/verify? Anyone in here ever been through the same situation?

Any input will be highly appreciated..

Hi Jolie,

I had problem with DMV to but it was my last name according to INS it was still in my maiden name even if I showed to them my green card . I was advice to go to USCIS so we made an infopass and just showed to them my Green card , EAD and my marriage certificate. After 1 week we went back to DMV and got my learner's permit.

Good topic and good advice! Make sure your name and initials are the same on ALL documents.

My first name is STEPHEN. I was going through a STEVE phase and had my passport as STEVE when it was handed to USCIS in 2003. They used the STEPHEN from my Birth Certificate. This caused alot of trouble when I went to DMV in Virginia to get a licence. I had to try 3 different offices and use sleight of hand with my evidence documents to get the woman to give me a licence! They were more picky than the USCIS.

ALSO NOTE......If you come from a country that drives on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! Like we do. Then you need to take the driving test. Which is almost as scary as your K1 interview.....LOL (I almost failed this because in the US you are encouraged to look over your shoulder when changing lanes, where I seem to remember being taught to use the Mirrors)

Anyway, let's hope that all your Marriages are "Closer Than They Appear"

17th November 2007 - I129F SENT TO CSC

In Charleston..I was able to get my license with my NOA for I-485 BUT because I have hyphenated my name on new documents..and my passport is in my maiden name..and my SSN is still in my maiden they didn't think I would pass the security check..I did(phew) My theory behind hyphenating(at least for now) seems to be paying off.. :D I seem to encounter less confusion!

Each State is different in how they handle their licenses. In Missouri, until you get your GC, you don't get a license period!

I concur... Although I didn't encounter any hardships applying for my driving permit, they are pretty strict especially here in Springfield. Somebody advised me to take the actual driving test in Aurora since it's a small town and they are not going to give me a hard time during the test. I'm thinking about doing that...

Thanks every one for the input.

i recommend you to get ready to pass your DMV written test before you'll go to DMV office.

Here's pretty good site to study:

Questions and answers for DMV written tests

for all states

Hallow dimetrio85. I recommend that too. I tried online sample questionnaires too and that helped me big time. And thank God I passed it on my first take.

Hi! how's it going? I had the same thing too. We had to drive to the DMV office in Denver to do that. But it only takes less than two weeks to receive the SAVE clearance, then you bring it to the DMV office to get your permit. Just remember that your written test is only valid for a month, so bring the clearance to the DMV office as soon as you get it.

Mine will expire then on the 14th if it's just 30days valid.

What did you give to SAVE?

I'm a better driver now (according to my husband)... in fact, he's making me drive sometimes whenever we do some errands. I still have to practice parallel and back parking and then I'll take the test this summer. Practice indeed makes perfect.
