Lost Passport

I entered JFK on saturday for the first time, with my K1 visa. I had a great weekend in New York, but have just realised I left my passport, with the visa, and I94 with a 90 day work permit, in the bedside drawer at the hotel. It was a nice hotel, and there is someone currently in our room. We have spoken to the hotel, they are waiting for the housekeeping manager to come out of a meeting, to check if they found it. What the #### do I do if they don't? I've been here two days, and I'm panicking. I can't believe I was so stupid.

you'll have to replace both, from what I've read... not sure how long that would take

at least it's a replacement of DOCUMENTS, ie you've done all the necessary procedures, and there would be a record of that... but I'm not sure how long it would take or how much it would cost

however, I wouldn't borrow trouble... odds are it's somewhere safe; wait to be sure before you panic

most people are pretty good and will realize that someone will be coming back for it but my questions why didnt housekeeping find it when cleaning the room after u left?????

Yeah, that's my thought too. If housekeeping had found it, surely they would have called my fiance....

You don't need to replace the K1 visa - it is null and void upon entry into the US. It is recommended, however, to include a copy of it with your AOS application. Not sure how you can do that now, though. It may not hurt to report it as lost to the London consulate - although the visa is null and void, they still may want to know that it is no longer in your possession. You can email them - LondonConsular@state.gov . They may be able to email you some kind of statement that it was issued which you could then send in with the AOS application.

What you should be more concerned about at this juncture is the I 94 that was stapled into your passport. That is what your status in the US is now derived upon. You need it to get a social security number as well as for filing AOS.

I would report your passport as lost ASAP too - you may have to google how to do that for a UK passport in the US.

Ouch - that's not good... I am sure that reporting it lost will be fine though - I am sure it has happened before and I am also sure that you aren't going to get deported for it if you report it and go about replacing it...

Report it lost.

Call your nearest embassy and ask them what they need you to do.

Contact immigration and ask about replacing the I-94. I know someone that had to do this. It cost them to do.

PANIC OVER! Housekeeping have it, although it took them an hour and a half to tell me. I am soooo relieved, but feel very stupid. I can't believe I left the most important item I own in a drawer in a hotel room. The only downside now is my fiance thinks I'm pretty stupid...! Fedex will pick it up and deliver it to me tomorrow morning. I will be so much happier when I have it in my hand again. Tash, you must think I'm a nightmare - first my phone, then this! (I left my phone on the tube when I met Tasha the day of her interview, but someone called and gave it back!). Very lucky!

You're no the only one to have left something so important behind.

The night before I flew out here on my K1 I stayed at an hotel at Manchester Airport because I had a very early flight. I was just about to leave my room and go for dinner when my mobile rang and it was my Mum telling me that I'd left something at her house... the 'Mysterious Brown Envelope'!!

Yep, I'd left THE most important thing behind! Thankfully she only lives about an hour away from the airport so my Dad drove all the way back to deliver it to me.

The thing is, I hadn't even noticed that I didn't have it until my Mum rang and I'll always wonder at what point it would have suddenly hit me. Probably once I was over the Atlantic!
