the thing about MECHA is that.. the time where chicanos only lived in the ghetto, and had low class working positions is way gone.. latinos own half of miami, there are politicians and influential people too.. so, the 'struggle' situation as a general issue doesn't exist anymore.. true, the illegal population is struggling the same way.. but, they're not chicanos..

What we all really need to do is start sticking together.I'm so tired of people saying things like "Well I don't get along with Dominicans.Mexicans,Puerto Ricans, etc." And these are Latinos saing this about other Latinos, mind you.And then they come up to me and ask something stupid like."What are you?"

Cesar Chavez Day was interestingly big here in Chicago... must be all that MeChA influence in Mayor Daley's evil government machine that subscribes to Obama's Kool Aid Campaign.

MEChA is NOT about the cubans, the puerto ricans, the colombians or even the Mexicans. It is about the CHICANOS, nothing more, nothing less. It started in the radicalism of the late '60s and its initial leaders were part of the pseudo-intellectual movement that included such disparate groups as the Chicago 7, the Black Panthers, and the Nation of Islam. While there are members that truly wish to elevate their fellow chicanos out of the ghetto, the main leadership is content to suck at the teat of public assistance and to complain about racism against "la gente".

MEChA takes the liberal side in the debate on illegal immigration but only insofar as illegal immigration allows MEChA to continue to be in the limelight and continue to snuffle in the trough of public assistance.

At the grassroot level, at least in California, it has connections with La Eme (for those not educated in Chicano politics, La Eme is the Mexican Mafia, a hard core chicano prison gang).

Cesar Chavez, the American who worked tirelessly to improve both working and living conditions for the migrant workers, never associated himself nor his organization with MEChA, although MEChA claims him as one of their own.

Wow, interesting information, thanks for sharing. Do you have any source for the Mecha-La Eme link?

Nuestra Familia (NF or X4) is in a death match with La Eme (MM or X3). while both are chicano prison gangs La Eme claims sur (south) while NF claims norte (north). the dividing line in California is Bakersfield; south to the Mexican border los vatos wear blue and are surenos hasta la muerte while north of Bakersfield the cholos wear red and are nortenos. In Bakersfield itself are the Bulldogs a group that broke away from NF. In the prison yards of San Quentin and Folsom if you're latino you either "ride" with la Eme or with la Familia. There are true stories of cousins that because of their geographic location had to hate each other.

La Eme has spread now to many other states' prison systems due to the federal government's desire to try to break the gang's stranglehold in California.

One other note, Mara Salvatrucha (MS13), the salvadoran gang, started in LA and did not want to pay protection money to La Eme. La Eme "greenlighted" MS13 as a result, which allowed any of the chicano gangs in the LA area to have open season on MS13. MS13 did not back down and held their own against the other gangs and have now reached an uneasy truce with La Eme. MS13 was started by ex soldiers from El Salvador's civil war. It is ironic that the 13 in MS13 means that that gang claims sur/south or allegiance to La Eme.

It is said that prison officials have helped foment the hate between NF and La Eme so that the officials could more easily control the prisons. If the inmates are fighting each other they are less likely to focus their hate on the prison officials. It's the old "divide and conquer" mentality.

My apologies for the thread hijack...
