wear it on the plane, tell everyone you are a mail order bride.

P.S. YES do not mail it either! You don't want it out of your sight (other than in a closet on board with you). Can you imagine arriving in Mexico for your wedding and they've lost your luggage? Or the mail never arrived?

People LOVE anything related to weddings so are happy to do it.

That is so true! I had more conversations and best wishes from airport and airline staff while dragging that dress through all the different airports! When my parents came down for our wedding (and brought the dress with them), my mom had a great time telling everyone about her daughter's upcoming wedding. It was cute hearing her tell all the stories. :)

Which airline are you flying? I know that may seem like an odd question, but it can matter. Some airlines have a "nicer" reputation than others to passengers, in addition to using different fleets.

Probably the three important pieces of information I'd need to know are...

  • Which airline?
  • Are you a member of the Frequent Flyer Program belonging to that airline?
  • What type of aircraft are you flying on?

I've already specified why what airline might be important, but passengers who belong to Frequent Flyer Programs generally get preferential treatment (especially if they have a lot of miles on their account). This shows airline loyalty and the airline, in turn, will be more likely to do favors for a passenger who is like this. If you're not part of this airline's Frequent Flyer Program, you may want to join -- even if you never fly on them again. It's usually free to join and the worst that happens to you is that you'll receive some annoying e-mails offering you deals (i.e. better ticket prices, credit cards, etc), all of which you can unsubscribe from later. Having proof of their program, however, may influence them to give you a spot to hang your dress over someone who isn't a member in their program.

As for what aircraft, this can matter because they come in all different sizes, which the smaller ones having less room. Regional aircraft sometimes lack the extra compartments that you might need to hang a wedding dress -- and even if they do have then, many flight attendants would use them to store their own gear first, leaving little-to-no room for you. If you're flying on a 737-class, you probably have nothing to worry about.

Although I haven't bought my tickets yet, the airline will be Mexicana. I am not a member of the frequent flier progam. ;) Although I should have joined a while ago since I have made various trips to Mexico. I'm looking at an old invoice from the travel agency where I usually buy my tickets and it says EQP: AIRBUS A320, so I'm not sure if this is the aircraft. In the past, I have flown through Delta and that aircraft was a BOEING 737, but I prefer Mexicana since the flight attendants seem much nicer. But honestly, there is never any space on the overhead compartments. I always see people stuffing all sorts of stuff in their compartments. So I really hope that the flight attendants will take my dress and hang it in one of their compartments.

Or then again, I could wear a sexy bikini to my wedding. Imagine the face of the grandma when she sees me. :o

An Airbus 320 is fine. In most cases, that'll be around the same size as most 737's you'll fly on, unless going overseas. As for the overhead bins, you're right -- people tend to stuff all sorts of bags in there, even when the carry-on luggage they have should be gate-checked. I've seen people bring things on such as golf bags and guitar cases. Obviously, those items take up way too much room, but somehow still made it on.

As others have said, you'll just need to explain to the flight attendants that you have a wedding dress packed and you don't want it to get wrecked. Very few individuals would refuse such a request. Just to be on the safe side, however, you might want to CALL the airline ahead of time and see if you can make the arrangement before getting on the plane. This way the crew knows about it. Just in case someone else wants to use that compartment on the day of the flight and gets to it before you, you'll already have it "booked." ;)
