My husband and I are having our big, religious wedding in Mexico this August. I've ordered the perfect wedding dress, but now am worried about how to transport the dress. :o We will be taking a flight from Los Angeles, to Guadalajara, Mexico. Does anyone have any suggestions on transporting the dress? I really don't want to have to put the dress in a suitcase, it's a pretty big dress.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I've heard you can ask the cabin crew to hang it up, but have never tried it myself. Call the airlines and see if this is a possibility. Otherwise I'd go with a box or garment bag as carry on

Box it up and send it by mail  It´s not as big as you think it is :) It´s not a problem :) And if you are scared to box it yourself ask the dry cleaners to do it for you or the shop where you bought it from :)

I work for a big airline. No problem to take it with you in a garment bag as a carry-on. The flight-crew will put it in the closet for you. Best of luck to you!

I've seen the stewards/stewardesses put wedding dresses in the closet like compartments in the front of the plane. They hang them nicely. Not sure if that is available on all planes, though. I would call and ask as well.

Otherwise, I agree with the carry on route as long as it fits in a box or case of the proper size to store. Keep in mind, it might get crushed like that, depending on how full the plane is.

If it were me, I would purchase a large, hard, suitcase of some sort, just for the dress and check it.

Never ever put it in checked baggage.

I had a very heavy dress with a long train. We had it packed in a garment bag. My parents brought it with them from Canada, and I flew with it back to Canada and had no troubles with having the flight attendants hanging it up in the front of the plane. And we flew on some mighty small planes.

You could wear it on the plane. Your neighbors would love it...especially if you had the middle seat.

I came back to Kansas City from a San Diego/Tijuana trip wearing an obnoxiously huge sombrero on the plane. Most people got a kick out of it. Not my neighbors though. :jest:

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. I really don't want to check it in though. I would feel much better carrying it on with me, in carry on.

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. I really don't want to check it in though. I would feel much better carrying it on with me, in carry on.

I had to take mine from Italy and they let me take it on the plane, they just told me to let them know about it at the check-in and then to give it to the stewardess during the flight (who hung it in their closet where they have their stuff). I had called the airlines before the trip to check about this and that's what they told me to do. I had no problem whatsoever, they actually advised me not to check it in because if they damaged it or lost etc they wouldn't want to have to refund it.

Ah one last thing...they did tell me that if the dress wouldn't go through the scanner at security (not sure about the name, you know...those things where they scan your carry-ons lol)then I couldn't take it on the plane and would have to check it in. But it was a pretty big dress and it did go through.

definitely DO NOT check it!

 OR mail it!

Lots of other people have said it...just have the airline staff hang it for you. People LOVE anything related to weddings so are happy to do it.

Does anyone remember the show about Southwest Airlines where they showed the baggage handler cart dropping a garment bag that had a wedding dress in it and I think it gets run over by another cart. In the end they showed the wedding dress shredded.

Which airline are you flying? I know that may seem like an odd question, but it can matter. Some airlines have a "nicer" reputation than others to passengers, in addition to using different fleets.

Probably the three important pieces of information I'd need to know are...

  • Which airline?
  • Are you a member of the Frequent Flyer Program belonging to that airline?
  • What type of aircraft are you flying on?

I've already specified why what airline might be important, but passengers who belong to Frequent Flyer Programs generally get preferential treatment (especially if they have a lot of miles on their account). This shows airline loyalty and the airline, in turn, will be more likely to do favors for a passenger who is like this. If you're not part of this airline's Frequent Flyer Program, you may want to join -- even if you never fly on them again. It's usually free to join and the worst that happens to you is that you'll receive some annoying e-mails offering you deals (i.e. better ticket prices, credit cards, etc), all of which you can unsubscribe from later. Having proof of their program, however, may influence them to give you a spot to hang your dress over someone who isn't a member in their program.

As for what aircraft, this can matter because they come in all different sizes, which the smaller ones having less room. Regional aircraft sometimes lack the extra compartments that you might need to hang a wedding dress -- and even if they do have then, many flight attendants would use them to store their own gear first, leaving little-to-no room for you. If you're flying on a 737-class, you probably have nothing to worry about.
