Have you lost your minds? It's Sunday morning! Who does math on Sunday morning?

Believe me, I said the same thing to hubby... And I also told him "My toe hurts, I cannot do math right now"

Aha... :P

They each paid $10 for the room originally, but the actual cost per person was $8.333, so when the bellboy gave them each $1 as change, all 3 of them were cheated out of .666 and times 3 adds up to the $2 the bellboy kept.

:crying::crying::crying: Steven, I still cannot understand and doesn't make sense to me. Should I see a doctor for my toe so I can think?

:P It gave me trouble also, but the math mistake has to do with communitive properties...while you can switch addition and subtraction of numbers in any order and they remain consistent, you can't mix around multiplication and division with addition and subtraction. Hope that makes sense. :P

Yup. The order of operations is something that's taught (or should be) to every elementary student: PEMDAS. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. I know one way kids are often told to remember it is by thinking of "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally."

Thus there's no dollar missing, someone just can't do addition!

It must have been Sunday morning for them too. :hehe:

I better take that $1 from my husband...

My nose is bleeding. But i know that $25 (hotel) + $3 (3 men) + $2 (bellboy) is = $30.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room <<-- It's wrong. You can't say that. They didn't pay $9 each but $9.333333333333333 x 3 is equals $28 plus $2 (bellboy) = #30

:help: Arrrrrgghhhh Help! my nose is bleeding again. :bonk:

Three men went into a motel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30 so each man paid $10 and went to the room. A while later, the man behind the desk realized that the room was only $25 so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5.

On the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27, add the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29.

Where is the other $1?

Sorry if this has been posted. My husband sent me this and wanted me to send back the answer. Anyone kind enough to share me the answer?

I agree, chicken was first obvously.

The original post/question is a joke/mind teaser. The problem is a little sleight of hand with the numbers. Near the end, when he adds the 2$ that the bellboy stole to the cost of the room, that was the error and where the problem lies. The two dollars he stole was NOT part of the cost of the room anymore, and is just a flatout theft. Given that, here is the answer: Room originally, $10 each x3 for a total of 30 dollars. Refund of $5, 3 of which went to the guests and 2 stolen by the bellboy. So thus, to reword thatfinal sentence of the puzzle, it should be:

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27, add SUBTRACT the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29 $25, which is the correct amount. You don't add the 2 dollars the BB stole to te cost of the room, as teh cost of teh room was only $25... The $2 is just a loss due to theft.
