Do MENA ppl keep birds as pets? I think some very orthodox Hindus do not believe in keeping dogs and cats in the house(maybe because they need to eat meat?) but I saw a lot of pet parrots in Nepal and India. My sweet Senegal parrot Lani Girl died in October '06 and I miss having a parrot in the house so much - she was my baby... Govi loves all animals as well and we have talked about getting another parrot - I have held off on getting another one because I want to get a bird that gets along with both of us.

My hubby wants Doves. He says his dad use to raise them. :)

Nice - I love the cooing they make - better than a parrot screech at times

My auntie in Hawaii was a big bird lover - she had something like 5 birds at one time, most rescues. She took care of this little wild barred dove whose leg was broken and he bacame like her pet, though she didn't keep him in a cage. She would just leave the door open and he would come inside.

How do you go about keeping doves? That sounds like it could be a nice thing to try.

Doves require a bit more care than, say, a finch would. You need to keep them in pairs (either female/male or female/female) and, preferably, in the largest cage that you can afford. To be happy, they really need free-flight time out of the cage at least once a day. Um...they're also kind of dumb (I preferred raising pigeons and one day I will get a crow or a cowbird!) but can be very sweet and affectionate if you work with them. Not an ideal pet if you have young children around because they tend to startle easily. :)

My cat has been under my youngest daughter's bed ever since my husband arrived. She only ventures out to eat and poop unless the kids are home and then she sticks with them. Hopefully she'll find her way to him soon.
