I just moved to California, sat my driving test and bought a car.

I'd been getting really high quotes from Geico and Progressive and some of the other big guys because I have no driving record here. When I went to buy my car at Audi I mentioned this to my salesman and he gave me a number for a broker he and some of his clients use.

The broker was able to take into account my 11 years of accident free driving in the UK. All I had to do was fax my license.

My brokers name is Lynette and her number is (858) 514 3812. She was great and made everything really easy. I think she is based in San Diego. If you call say Jamie Galloway gave you the number and explain your situation to her.

I'm not saying use her and this isn't an advert for her, I just know I struggled to get cheap insurance and she worked hard to hook me up.

I also discovered that State Farm also accept the UK license in some circumstances but you have to call them up. I'm sure other insurance companies will recognise your UK license but hopefully this will be a good start for and UK folk trying to insure their cars.

Good luck and I hope this is helpful to someone. This site has kept me sane the last few years!

How $much$ is your auto insurance if you don't mind my asking? per month..

I got Farmer's and I have, so far, only 4-5 months driving experience here in the US but has at least 16 years of driving history back in my home country. Farmer's covered my car insurance for a fairly good rate. I am renewing this May. I am trying to see if I'd keep Farmer's or find a cheaper rate for premium coverage.

I'm insured with AAA and they also took my 23 years of UK driving into consideration.

I just needed to fax them a copy of my licence, particularly the paper portion.

I had to get insured under my hubby's policy to get a good rate as i don't have my driver license for 3 years yet.

I recommend that to everyone, if your hubby has a clean record.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

I'm paying about $500 for the first six months to insure my Audi A4 V6 which is pretty much what I pay at home as I'm still under 30. Seemed good to me.

I looked into using my wife's insurance but decided to try and build my own insurance record.

That's awesome!! I might as well call Lynette and see how she can help me. Thank you. You've been most helpful.

I know how difficult it is to get a cheap car insurance. I struggled too and couldn't get a fairly cheap rate.

ETA: I also decided to have my own car insurance.

When I added my husband to the insurance about 2 years ago it only cost about 30.00 more a month and that was when he was not licensed in the USA, most states have reciprocal agreements with many countries that allows you to drive there without penalty for a year. When he got his license it went down about 14.00 a month. I am with MET-Life and their rates are very good. I was with GEICO before we changed everything and I was paying like 600.00 every 6 months, and when I went with MET, It almost was cut in half. Hope this helps!

I did call. She gave me a rate cheaper by a hundred than what I am paying in another insurance company now. I'll try to avail of a group discount. It may or may not make a big difference at all.

Oh boy, the things one doesn't think about! Mai's never driven a car in her life! Most people in Vietnam travel by motorbike, and that's how we prefer to get around there. I wonder how much this is going to cost us? Luckily, insurance rates in Iowa are much cheaper than California. I really hope we'll be coming home together June 3rd.
