How do I pack my stuff when I move across the border?

I was just curious, I am getting all my things together and bubble wrapping my important stuff. I had planned on boxing everything up and then taking it with me on the plane, it will probably only be a few boxes anyway.

My question is, when I go across the border (ill be flying from Seattle airport, so my POE will be the Sumas border crossing) will they open all my boxes and make me un-bubblewrap everything? (I like duct tape and bubble wrap, who doesnt?) I plan on having a manifest with a list of everything in the boxes and their approximate value.

Would that be a good way of doing it? or do you guys know the protocols or even a better way of doing it? I don't want to ship everything if I dont have to.

Also... any advice on how to get my wedding dress there and in one piece?

Thanks!

I think your POE will then be Seattle or Vancouver (you clear before you leave Canada in most cases).

I've never heard of people's boxes being opened, but do have with you an inventory of what's in them.

As for your wedding dress, I have no clue === I would hate for your dress to be mishandled and dirtied by airlines baggage operators!!!!!

I would just pack them as you normally would for air travel. They may or may not open them at customs when ur driving across. Do have a contents list!! I crossed in Maine, and they didnt even look in my uhaul truck!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

i would use freight (air or road).... probably waaayyyy less expensive than extra boxes leaving with you on the plane.

just make a list of what contain each box and you might need to fill up a form....to see with the freight person you will deal with.

Then you will clear customs and activate your visa at the border, either in Sweetgrass or in this other one in Washington State (can't remember the name). You need an inventory of your stuff; and there is a customs form for it... can't remember which one
