Soon my fiance will be waiting for Packet 3 to arrive, can he go ahead and get his police certificates or does he have proof that he needs them? He will have to travel about 300 miles to get one of them since he has moved in that last 3 years. Just wondering if we could get ahead a little bit.

Thanks Sarah

Police Records

Available. Criminal records since 1901 covering the entire Republic are maintained at the South African Police Headquarters, Pretoria. The period The Commissioner of the South African Police issues certificates upon application, stating whether or not a criminal record exists, and, if so, particulars of the offense as well as any sentence passed.

The police authorities require an applicant to present verification of identity, such as a Book of Life, or valid passport, and a payment of R41.00 (South African rand forty one payable in cash, cheque or postal order, made payable to the South African police).

To obtain a certificate that is issued in single copy only, fingerprints must be taken by the local police in the applicant’s place of residence. The South African police forwards the completed fingerprint chart and the fee to the head office in Pretoria for issuance of the police clearance certificate. If the applicant is residing in the United States, he or she should forward a bank draft in the aount of R41.00 together with a completed fingerprint chart (bearing an official signature and stamp of the local police station) to:

Only one report needed from Pretoria, it is a national record. When the consulate says "From every place lived since age 16" they mean every "Country"

I would get it just after the NOA2 letter is sent to petitioner in the US.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

We just got one of these too. It takes about 28 working days and is valid for 1 year. The best thing to do is to go to the local police station, pay the 59R and they will fill out the form and take finger prints. He should take the form, make a copy of the receipt and courier it to the Pretoria office. Otherwise it could sit in the local police office until they have enough to send.

I would suggest that after the 28 working days he should call them and arrange for the certificate to be picked up in Pretoria. Either by a friend or by courier. I'd hate for your interview to be delayed bacause of SA bureaucracy.

Also make sure he has his unabridged birth certificate. This can take a long time to get. Send me a message if you need more information.

Hi Sarah,

Congratulations on the approval! Just a note: the police clearance is valid for 6 months only, the consulate will not accept anything older - I confirmed this with them two weeks ago when I collected my packet 3.

Be careful to get it too soon. I got mine as soon as I sent my packet in and then had to redo it as it expired every 6 months and my packet 3 only arrived 6 months after I sent in all the forms. Prepare yourself for the most arduous wait of your life. But be assured, we've all gone through it and lived to talk about it
