filing taxes before SSN received

I was wondering if any of you who were married in 2007 are being claimed for in the taxes for that year. I believe they need a SSN to process it.

Anyone know if I can apply for an ITIN number or will this jeopardise my SSN application once the visa is processed?

IRS and SSA are not linked so applying for ITIN using form W7 will not affect SSA's issuing of an SSN.

And you DO NOT need an SSN to file an IRS return, that is what ITIN is for.

The Tax ID has no impact on your SS#. So if you can get one pronto because you want to be included on the return, do so.

Since I've never lived w/my husband (he's the beneficiary) I claimed "head of household" and didn't put him on the return for 2007.

Sent I-130 to VT 25-Oct-2007

I-130 Moved to California 6-August-2008

You don't apply for a SSN until you check the box on the DS-230 or apply at SS, so you are eligible to get an ITIN number. Your other choice is to file for an extension to file your taxes and see if the SSN is issued before the extension expires. If you do file for extension, make sure you've paid in enough to cover taxes due so you don't face any penalties.
