why not increase the fees and have it pay for itself?

Why not increase the tolls on roads and have *them* pay for themselves? Roads are heavily subsidized by tax dollars; most of them are entirely free to users no matter how often they use them. Why shouldn't public transportation, which improves the environment, decreases traffic congestion, and benefits everyone similarly be heavily subsidized by tax dollars?

There's a difference between being proud of one's accomplishments and having the misguided notion that you only have yourself to thank for them, and that the only difference between you and someone who has less money than you is some hard work.

It's not a misguided notion. Hard work is the difference between a successful person and a loser.

(Intellectual capacity plays a major role as well - you can't fix stupid.)
