Kindof a general testing the waters question, I've found the forum's input to be wise and thoughtful in the past... I've read in past posts that receiveing SSI or similar aide has led people to be denied as sponsors, despite also having a cosponsor.

I graduate from university in March. My income has been minimal - my parents paid my way thru school. I recieved SSI (suplemental security income) for about a year and a half because I am disabled (cerebral palsy) and could not work+go to school concurrently AND the allowance my parents provided left me under the poverty line.

I took 6 months off school recently and within weeks drummed up web design/programming contracts for $2000+ (not even remotely related to my major, ironically). so my ability to support myself is not at issue. My financial history is.

I've canceled my SSI, and have a letter stating such, as of December 20th. I have copies of invoices totalling about $3000 for various small contracts in November/December. I have an order for another $2000 job comming in in late march, once I graduate. Beyond that, I have earned virtually nothing. My parents will co-sponser Ollie, and they earn ~$125k with no dependents. They own their home and some investment property.

Does this sound reasonable? Will the INS look at my case and be reasonable, see that obviously while in school w/a physical disability, I could not earn money, but the invoices obviously demonstrate ability to earn a living wage? Plus the cosponsor insurance factor...

or is the disability going to act against me? will they ignore my potential as a university graduate with a BS and focus only on my past need for SSI?

If your parents have already agreed to sponsor Ollie and their income is well above the poverty line, you will be good to go. You'll need to submit information relating to your own finances too, of course, but your parents' sponsorship will seal the deal.

No federal agency would deny your petition, or your sweetie's visa application, solely on the basis of your disability, so don't worry about that, either. You sound like you've lined your ducks up well enough. :)

That is pretty much the whole point of the co-sponsor, you don't make enough so they sign saying they will sponsor you and not let your foreign fiance go on welfare/become a burden to the state. As long as your parents qualify there shouldn't be any problem at all.

latitudes,

You use the word 'obviously' way too much, and what you seem to think is obvious is not likely to be so obvious to a 3rd party whose job requires them to be skeptical.

Your ability to support yourself - and your fiancee - is very much an issue, and your potential as a graduate is no more helpful than your past as a student is harmful. You've got a current situation that is encouraging, but no track record to indicate whether it's sustainable or is just a 'flash in the pan'.

What you do have, as other posters have pointed out, is willing sponsors who appear to be satisfactory based on the information that you present about them.

all reasuring comments to hear :) Back in November, I read some posts warning that SSI was a major red flag. Someone with multiple sponsors but still receiving SSI was denied. I was a little worried. :)

I can only speak from my own perspective - to me, this is all rather obvious, of course I can support myself when I'm out of school.

I understand that others - including the INS - don't have my perspective. that's why I asked for the communities' opinion.

If that person was petitioning through the Philippines, that may have been the defining difference.
