ABU DHABI (AFP) - The crown prince of the United Arab Emirates of Dubai has bought a female camel for a record 2.72 million dollars, an organiser at a camel beauty pageant said on Monday

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum "bought camels... worth 16.5 million dirhams (4.49 million dollars), including a female camel... for 10 million dirhams (2.72 million dollars)," Hamad bin Kardoum al-Amiri said.

Amiri, quoted by the official WAM news agency, made the remarks on the sidelines of the nine-day beauty pageant which opened on Wednesday in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi.

More than 10,000 camels -- including females which are the fasting racing camels -- from across the Gulf are competing for prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars. One hundred cars are also up for grabs.

The contest is part of a camel festival in Abu Dhabi that aims to celebrate and preserve the region's cultural heritage.

Oil-rich Abu Dhabi, one of seven emirates that make up the UAE federation, produced the world's first test-tube purebred camel and has begun using remote-controlled robot riders in its camel races in place of child jockeys.

It's just a drop in the bucket to them. Like in UAE, the lower the number on a car license plate the more it cost. Earlier this year the

number “5” license plate sold for $6.8 million dollars and another 300 vanity plates sold for another $56 million at auction. The number “1” was auctioned for 14 million.

Too much money, did I hear someone has too much money, being the good person I am, I am willing to take some of that money off of their hands. I saw a TV show that showed DHABI, and it looks great, people are getting rich, without me. Wrong just all kinds of wrong

Perhaps these camels spit gold, justifying that price.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

I want to point something out for a second here.

2.72 million dollars.

We have Palestinians and Iraqis suffering - and 2.72 million dollars on a camel?

Then when these same "Arab Leaders" are questioned on the situation in the Middle East - they point the finger at Israel.

The ARAB LEADERS are the problem in the region - that - in my opinion, is sorry leadership and corruption at its finest.

It's a disgrace.

That guy should be overthrown. That guy and every so-called monarch throughout the region. They're all dirt.

[ EDIT : This post here, is one of the reasons I love America. Why? Well, I don't have the guts to say the same things to any of the people I know in Jordan. :\ After all, I'm a citizen there - and - I sort of value my freedom. ]

Due to the many praises for great investigative reporting, he probably will end up digging through contracts while at the same time coordinating field trips for community leaders.

I know what would happen. It's the same reason why I don't speak my mind to my fellow Jordanians when I'm in Jordan.

That reporter would be shut up real quick.

Maybe share a nice concrete "coffin" with some rats and roaches for a while, and - some occasional free-time for a good flogging, until said reporter rethinks their views.

When you're over there in one of those monarchies - you just toss a portrait of the current tyrant up on the wall, and be happy you eat daily.
