Capt.,

Would you consider creating a subforum within OT for posts related to the Presidential Election, including the Primaries? The number of threads about the campaigns and the candidates are running amok.

I'll just resurrect my $5 surcharge for each new political thread. That'll curb it! ;)

I disagree. The election will be over in a few months and then this forum will be listless for another 2/12-3 years.

How about a category selection then for the poster of the thread, then adding a filter for those who want to see a list of threads under a similar topic? That would give each viewer the option to see all of the threads in OT, or just the ones relating to certain subjects.

a politics thread doesn't need to be just about the elections right now.

a politics thread doesn't need to be just about the elections right now.

I thought about that, but there are a lot of topics that bleed into politics - immigration for example, which would make it difficult to decide where it belongs.

All these political threads have pretty much kept me out of the OT forum. I agree that they need a subforum. It's ongoing. Even when there wasn't an upcoming election, there were numerous political threads being posted. At this point there is still another 7 months of this. And then after that there'll be the numerous threads discussing the election. And then after that there'll be the numerous threads discussing how much better so-and-so would have been than so-and-so. And so on and so on and so on. I think we should amend the byline.....

I think what unfortunately happens way too often is that a topic gets politicized. For example, somebody posts a thread about a single mother and her child who has leukemia. Somebody comes along and makes some backhanded remark in reference to some political ideology and then the whole sh!tfest ensues. There are some here who like that kind of excitement, but too much of it is as boring as never having a heating discussion about anything. We just need some balance. Let people post what they want to post (within the TOS), but offer them a way to filter through OT for topics they're most interested in.

or we have 3 different threads - an obama, hillary, and mccain thread where things related to either candidate is supposed to be posted. that would sure cut down on me opening so many different threads to see the same stuff going on daily.

That would be an excellent idea, imo.

One thread for Obama topics, one thread of Clinton topics, one for McCain and an additional one for any other topics pertaining to the election. Any questions, queries or news articles would go in the respective threads.

I too have felt that the political threads are taking over the OT section of this forum. There is anything between 10-15 (or more) a day posted. It overwhelms the other topics that members here post. OT is supposed to be a place for people to forget the immigration process and have a bit of fun away from it all. The political threads can sometimes make it seem like fun is a far off distant place.

I'm not knocking them, or saying they are not welcome, but maybe a bit more controlled posting wouldn't go amiss here. ;)

How about an instant 12 month ban for anyone who posts more than 2 political topics per week?

If a McCain thread was started but nobody posted, does the thread exist?

you and i both know the easy remedy for that is post something that draws hillbots.

I'm not normally into micromanaging discussion, but summat needs to be done with all these political threads. Dunno what the appropriate solution is, but something should be done. Cos it's completely out of hand.

It is.

Far too many topics started that are Anti-Hillary or Anti-Obama. It's the whole "Well look what *I* found!" thing. Yes, I'll post in them - I'll bash Hillary any chance I get - but I don't go around flooding the board with new topics. I posted an unbiased poll, and that's really about all for the past month. I don't need to try to distract attention from my candidate's short-comings by pointing out those of the opponent. In the end, EVERYone looks dirty after the SpinMachine has been through the neighborhood.

I suggest a limit on how many political (election) topics you can start. For THAT is the problem....the same people posting topic, after topic, after topic. (10 in one day ring any bells?)

What sounds fair? One per week? One per day? I'd go for one per week, myself.

Or maybe we should just have a moratorium on election threads in general.... Because, be honest....if we have a Hillary-bashing subforum, an Obama-bashing subforum, etc - it's just gonna be a bloodbath. In the end it's all just a big willy-measuring contest.
