"Even though Obama probably takes more liberal positions on many issues than does Hillary Clinton, Schaffner says the perception among Republicans is that he is more moderate."

Speaking as a Rep that has a lot of Rep friends I can say that statement is not accurate. It's more of a wish by his supporters than reality.

And yet, polls have shown time and again that he's viewed more favorably among Republicans than Hillary Clinton. Why do you suppose that is? Because Republicans view more favorable the Democrat they perceive as more liberal?

Viewed in a favorable way and saying they would vote for are two different things. I view Obama much more favorably than Clinton but would never vote for him. As a person he is a much better guy.

Maybe they hope that if they tout Obama as a moderate that will compromise with reps, some that don't take the time to really look at the man may be fooled. Those of us that are paying attention are not fooled. If he turns out to be the nominee I am sure his liberal record will get a full airing.

And that it will, Gary.

The problem is that liberals are much more inclusive and tolerant of other "leanings" in the political process than conservatives tend to be by experience.

Lets not go their shall we? I can cite hundreds of examples of intolerance when it comes to "liberals" and "conservatives". When it comes down to it people are people.

Well, to clarify, I wasn't referring to people. Or was I? In the previous post you say politicians are people... so I guess I can agree to that. By adding that if you can Google hundreds of true examples of Democratic politicians playing intolerant (and I'd probably agree to most of the examples), then I can also do the same but an order of magnitude greater for Republican politicians being equally, if not more, intolerant.

Nevertheless, I agree with you. People are people. Some more intolerant than others and sometimes politics assigns roles for the intolerance.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I will use myself as an example. I am very conservative when it comes to my politics. But in my life I doubt if you will find a person that is more "live and let live". I may not agree with a persons way of living but I am not about to look down at you over it.
